Sometimes, music really touches a nerve. Certain songs make me think of events of times they make me recall – other songs just touch a nerve and get my emotions going
One is the Last Post. I’ve never served in the forces, where I believe it’s more commonly played, but even now watching a youtube video I can feel it

Last year we stopped in Ypres and went to the Menin Gate where they’ve played the Last Post every night since 1929
From 11th November, 1929 the Last Post has been sounded at the Menin Gate Memorial every night and in all weathers. The only exception to this was during the four years of the German occupation of Ypres from 20th May 1940 to 6th September 1944.

We were lucky enough to visit on the night of the extended ceremony, having already called in at Tyne Cot cemetery. I have no idea how I didn’t just break down and bawl my eyes out when they played that.
Another one is “Abide with me”, the traditional hymn sung before the Rugby League Challenge cup final. It’s quite something to be in the middle of 80,000 people belting it out, and I now begin to choke up when I sing it
