Friday afternoon is traditional ‘treat’ time in our office, so today I chose

    Exhibit A: “The Vanilla Slice”

Now, I’ll go with the masses on how to eat it:

a: just bite, and risk a sideways custard explosion (already got yellow t-shirt on)

b: lid off, eat lid, eat custard and base

c: lid off, eat custardy bit, then lid

    d: ????

    What do you reckon?

sharpen your teeth, then you will be able to bite through clean without splurging.

Just put the whole thing in your mouth.

    edit: too slow.

    I would say

but then I’d have to explain my Vanilla Slice Eating Methodology…

Probably a bit late now, but I’d slice horizontally through the custard halfway through so you got 2 slices, each with custard on.

Either that or just eat it & suffer the messy consequences….

Right. I have applied my considerable intelligence to this in the past, and as you may expect I have come up with a solution.

What you have to do is take a bite from the top piece first, then follow up with the bottom bit. This way the top and bottom pieces never get squished together and the custard stays put. The top bite is easier if you do it laterally rather than longitudinally – it avoids getting custard on your chin and icing on your nose.

    Wow that’s very custardy.

Our local shop has more pastry layers in the middle and its comes wrapped up in pretty confectionery paper.

So D would be mine. Hold tight to the wrapper and stuff into mush.

However I wouldn’t have chosen that cake, its not got chocolate on or in it.

wouldn’t more pastry layers make it a millefeuille?

That’s so hard to pronounce in a cake shop, that I’ve always just pointed to the cake in question.

I think a millefeuill thingymabob has cream, not custard, I stand corrected though.

A cake of that nature should be eaten without hands

    millefeuille => meal-foy 🙂

You may be right about the cream vs. custard – I’m not an expert, but I do like them a lot!
