- Frame respray, ‘custom’ paint jobs?
My three year old Smuggler frame is looking tired, still performs great. Was looking at getting it repainted but I like the thought of something a bit diferent to the stock all over same colour matt black it came with.
Anyone got any success stories or recommendations of frame painters / sprayers? Not sure what they call themselves. I realise it might mean sending the frame away and not having it for a few months.
Also that it might cost a substantial chunk of getting a new frame. Would love to see photos if anyone got anything done. .
Cheers.Posted 4 months agopotheadMember
Fatcreations. No idea of cost, I’d guess it’s gonna b pricey and not sure I’d want to ride any of the frames I’ve seen as they are more like works of art than resprayed bike frames. Afaik they did all of the custom frames Steve Peat rode in his final world cup seasonPosted 4 months agojjprestidgeMember
It’s going to cost at least £250 for something basic. More complicated stuff is £500+
Mate of mine has all the gear to do it (and used to do a lot of custom motorbike resprays in the past) but isn’t sure whether there’s enough demand to make it worthwhile for him.

Fat creations, you are looking at bookings for next summer now, prices can easily get into 4 figures if using posh paint/complicated designs/lots of colours. Work is amazing though.
Im giving JMJ designs a go with a helmet first (pretty basic design, around £200), then if that goes well, I’ll look at frame options.
also seen tommy450 on instagram, his work looks pretty good, but don’t know much more about him.
Argos Cycles are a fairly safe bet too I thinkPosted 4 months agotomhowardSubscriber
too late to edit..

Depends on the design but Fat Creations need your frame for a couple of weeks, once its your turn, but obvs you need to have the bike stripped to the frame, everything out style, so theres time needed to do that before you send it/once you get it back.Posted 4 months agoGolfChickMember
Had my mk1 bronson carbon done by fat creations. Posted it down to them and collected it once it was done as I was driving ‘past’ on my way home from France. I had it immediately covered by invisiframe who did a custom kit for me which covered even more of the paint than the original kit did. I had it done when the wait wasn’t all that long but I know he’s gotten more and more popular. Absolutely stunning job he did and its now one of a kind would definitely recommend him and apparently on most occasions your original warranty will still be covered because he is who he is.View this post on Instagram
Given the bike a bit of TLC over the last week including full bottom bracket and headset strip. Just needs a full Chris king service and it’s good as new. All set for FoD double date tomorrow! #santacruzbikes #santacruzbronson #hopetech #srameagle #rockshoxpike #thomson #chrisking #dmrvault

At the other end of the scale there’s powdercoating which will be £50-£150. And depending on who does it and how much you pay can still have different paint effects in the base coat or a clearcoat.
Other benefit is its a lot tougher than paint. But also heavier (but only by the sorts of margins that would worry real weight weenies).Posted 4 months ago
