Thanks to all who replied to my original thread, greatly appreciated 🙂 In the end we went with Silverpigeon’s suggestion of the Yorkshire Dales, staying at the New Inn. Not a bad accommodation option, though maybe a little pricey for what you get (large room, but with twin beds, shared facilities, poor heating…) Food was tasty enough and they have some good local ales & bitters on tap.
The Mountain Bike Livery out the back is very good, Jon is a top bloke and helped us out with route maps and local advice. He’s sold the pub side of the business, he just runs the Livery now, you pay £4 a night for storage and the use of the workshop, as well as his invaluable route maps and advice of course! 50p for a bike wash if you need it. All in all good value I reckon.
The riding was good, straight after we arrived we did a loop Jon called The Paddock, about 16km mainly on bridleways and a bit of road; this was a good intro for Mrs Psychle as it showed her that she could climb hills with some perseverance 🙂 And the scenery was nice (though ’twas a tad chilly in the afternoon/early evening!)
Sunday saw Mrs P taken down with the dreaded vomiting/diarrhoea belly virus that’s sweeping the nation, so she stayed at the Inn to be near amenities, poor thing was really suffering. She insisted I go off for a ride anyhow, as we’d driven 4 hours to get there, so I headed off on the Barden Moor loop, all in this was around 40km through some lovely scenery, didn’t see another cyclist either though there were a few walkers about (not many, I think it might’ve been a bit cold perhaps?). Also spotted my first grouse in the wild, which I found kind of cool (though probably totally par se to you Brits 🙂 )
I would recommend the Yorkshire Dales as a good introductory area for non-riders, it was a good weekend and I think Mrs P is interested in doing more (I’ve actually convinced her that a camper van is required to do further UK exploration!)
Anyhoo, just wanted to post a brief report on my weekend,(just in case anyone was interested 🙂 ). Thanks again for the advice, appreciated. Finally, here are a few pics that took my fancy as well:
