I’ve got some Shimano PD-GR500 pedals which are nice and grippy but the pins have exposed threads and a flat top which is fairly sharp. So much so that I have ruined a pair of very expensive winter tights by catching them on the pedal. They also wear away the soles of my shoes where the pins contact them.

Anyone know of some really decent flat pedals with pins that are rounded/much less sharp. Ideally with a nice wide base. I’ve looked online but the pictures sometimes show the pins as rounded when they’re not…

That’s kind of how flat pedals work.
All my fivetens end up with holes in the bottom pretty quickly.
I just use Stormsure to seal up any leaks.

If you had a vice or even some molegrips to hold the pins could you try filing them?

Most BMX pedals are composite/plastic with moulded pins.

If you go on the Tredz (other shops are available) website you can zoom in on the flat pedals and look at the pin types on each brand.

Get some cheap flats like the kind they give away with bikes, they’re usually just plastic – just go into an LBS, they’ll have some.

Don’t expect though to want to ride them offroad…

The ones we have in the Specialized Boomslangs aren’t threaded on the top. Most grippiest pins I’ve used but the platform is too big for my size 5s

The pins in Chromag Synths aren’t threaded. Also come with washers so you can make them shorter.

Thanks all – those Spesh ones look good. I might try a file etc but I’m not sure I can be bothered as there are quite a few pins across both the pedals…!  Not keen on the plastic ones at all and definitely not putting the really cheap standard ones that came on the bike back on…

I think the original Hope F20 had fairly smooth rounded non-threaded pins (which is why they weren’t very grippy).

I’m going to try some Specialized ones. 🤷‍♂️ I don’t do hardcore DH or anything and the GR500s were grippy enough just too sharp. I spent the whole summer with grazes and cuts on my shins just from wheeling the bike about and getting on and off. I didn’t mind the cuts etc but when they ripped my brand new winter tights it was the last straw!!!!

Any pedal with any real amount of grip will chew up your pedals and tights regardless of the pins.

Any that don’t are crap and you’ll slip off all the time

Does anyone else think changing the pedals instead of the pins is like throwing the baby out with the bath water.
Looking back, my first post wasn’t clear I meant the pins, damn editing time limit.

maybe overkill but i had difficulty getting the non bore cap side pistons out on a caliper last week.

+1 Ironically my Burgtech MK2’s were the least shin bashing pedals because despite weighing 400g each side and using M4 Screws for pins, the shear* grip meant you never came off the pedal to smash your shin, unlike the DMR’s that preceded them.

Also I suspect the huge screws did less damage to shoes than the little M2/M3 screws on newer pedals.

The Boomslangs have arrived (thanks for the recommendation @tracey). The pins are definitely much smoother and although likely to still bash my shins I’m hoping the fact that there is no sharp thread will mean less damage to fabric…. I’ll put them on at the weekend – incidentally the pins themselves would have been a straight swap for the ones in the GR500s as they fit, but the Boomslang pedals are a bit less bulky and smoother at the edges, so perhaps less likely to catch on things.

I got some from Certini…🤷‍♂️ they were 30%off or something… and yes I noticed the spare pins. 👍😎 Hopefully I won’t need extra washers (there are two included in the box but some people mentioned needing more…) .

If you use crank boots and SRAM cranks you will probably need a couple more washers.
If you are going to service them it’s worthwhile buying the correct removal tool. Makes the job easy.

I’ve got FSA cranks and already ordered the removal tool…😉

I took some pins out of mine, was no bother at all. Middle ones need to stay in to keep the bushing access door closed.

SRAM cranks… I used the pair of washers in the box, and the pair that were already on the cranks. Works perfectly. No boots though.
