Partner hitting 50, need to organise a family Sunday lunch for 8, mid August, in Surrey, not too far for the M25…

We are really failing to get anywhere. Any ideas?

Not especially flash, but the White Hart in Brasted has some very interesting and topical history… Was a Vintage Inn last time we went – fairly reliable – but it was a long time ago.

How flash? There is a pretty good range in and around Reigate (jct 8).

This place is very popular http://www.thependleton.co.uk

Pennyhill is flash and a lovely place to stay.
Food wise we prefer Alexander House near Turners Hill and is a short blast down the M23.

Drakes in Ripley, just off the A3 and a short distance off the M25 jct 10. I’ve not eaten there but our more wealthier neighbours have and enjoyed the experience! It’s got a Michelin star, so it must be flash.

The Filet ‘o’ Fish at Guildford McDonalds is a triumph.

I can second Drakes in Ripley but the food is very Michelin star ie small poncy looking plates of food so depends on what you’re after.

Kinghams in Shere is excellent, as is the Hurtwood in Peaslake now it’s under new management although the latter is Italian so depends on what you’re after. Very easy to go for a walk pre or post meal with the Hurtwood if the weather is good.

Mucky Duck has gone quite upmarket in the past few years, suburbanreuben. But it’s still not what i’d call super flash.

Woodlands Park Hotel is very nice, not quite as posh as Pennyhill Park

Arkle Manor? In fact there’s lots of choice on the A25 between Dorking and Reigate.

    Blimey!
I remember when the Hautboy tried to go properly posh, kicking the bikers out and up (down?) to the mucky duck or beyond.
Now there was a pub! When the altar- I mean bar- was at the far end, on a crisp winter morning with the sun streaming through the windows, Mr Coates waiting in his Derby County scarf to avail you of the finest ales in the land, and the parrot swinging on the chandeliers…
    Happy days!

    Slight hijack.
Does anyone stay over at Pennyhill?
We used to but they’ve really bumped the price up and you can’t stay in the spa all day when you leave any more.
So where else have you stayed with a spa that’s as good?

I have not eaten at Drakes, but their sister restaurant, the Anchor, is very good.

Langshott Manor – in Horley just off the A23 – same group as that Alexander House previously mentioned but it looks a bit more intimate from the photos.

we got married there but it looks like some halfwits have modernised the decor, it was more edwardian.

The Onslow Arms in West Clandon is less than 10mins from Junc 10 M25 and probably the ideal location for what you are looking for. VERY popular so book early to avoid disappointment.
