Five Ten winter shoe – why aren’t they available anywhere?

Does anyone know why it is so difficult to get hold of the Five Ten winter (flat) shoe – the Freerider EPS?

Id really like to get my hands (or feet) on the high top version. Just can’t find them anywhere.

Have they stopped making them for some reason?

Maybe it is a production problem because of Covid?

Dunno but there’s very little stock of the Impact Pro either.

I guess they’re just a bit crap at stock control?

EPS is discontinued I believe?.

They’re not made in this country and were a small market that seems dedicated to making it harder and more expensive to sell to us.

Something we’re all going to have to get used to.

I’m still waiting for the new one… they seem to have discontinued EPS mids ready for the “Trailcross Mid GTX” goretex mids they announced summer 2019… which are still vapourware two wet autumns later.

There will never be a properly waterproof flat shoe IMO. Best just buy what works pedal ride, and budget size wise for sealskinz below.

Don’t get excited, they really aren’t that great. Not particularly warm and barely water resistant when new and of course have the trademark Five Ten extended drying time.

The EPS is completely shit for the UK btw, you’ve dodged a bullet. It’s lovely and warm when it’s dry and cold, but they used a proofed leather for the upper instead of a suitable weatherproof/waterproof, so the first splash goes straight through, and after that they’re cold. “Weather resistant” as ever in mountain biking means “might as well have holes in”. I can see they could be great in some climates though, but cold and dry’s something we don’t really do much.

If you really want a set and you’re a 9, let me know, I have some somewhere. They’re shit though.

The standard old Freerider Element is a far better winter shoe, though, it’s not actually good, it’s not not terrible. Sadly the GTX Guide Tennie has disappeared now except in weird sizes but it’s great, if clumpy. Even the standard non-GTX one is better than most winter flat shoes.

I had a pair and sent them back. Very thin material and airy, too. Quite a special look to them.

A few of the German sites had then in stick recently.

I have high top EPS Freeriders, too. As said above, fine when it’s cold, but not great in the wet. I found that out when riding to work in a downpour with full length waterproof trousers covering the cuff of the shoes. Water ran in around the shoe/tongue and I had wet socks.

I’m not going to accuse Northwind of talking overblown guff, but I’ll just say I’ve found both the EPS low and mid to be excellent wet conditions shoes.

They certainly don’t wet through at the first splash and they stay dry waaaay longer than – for example – the standard Freeriders that I wore last weekend when I accidentally left the EPS at home.

I’m with Chapaking on this.  I don’t tend to ride in absolutely foils weather, but my EPS have been great through the wetter months.

I bought some of these for the winter. They are great so far. Warm, waterproof, and grippier that the five ten Trail Cross Mid Pros I was using in the summer.

I also got the Vaude Moab mid stx on the recommendation of stw. I’ve had one ride round cwmcarn so far, not raining but with plenty of standing water. Paired with mt500 spray trousers my feet stayed totally dry.

I’d say the grip was a smidge less than freeriders but still more than adequate.

I have also tried sealskinz but found they can only hold out so long against a truly sodden 5-10. Waterproof membranes just can’t handle that sort of environment, pressed hard against a waterlogged sponge.
