Any south Wales birders with some inside knowledge?

I’m near Talybont for a few days. Can anyone recommend good and reliable river spots to find Dippers? I love them and you can’t find then where I live

My original plan was to walk along the Usk near Gliffaes but I had a little reccy earlier (from the Llangynidr bridge) and it looks a bit fast flowing, although might be wider and slower downstream

    Can’t help with the location.

But I agree about dippers, there are loads in Peebles on the tweed and the eddleston

Afon Sawdde, in the gorge downstream of the Pontarllechau bridge.

PM me with your phone number for more information.

Find a nice spot alongside the river running between Talybont village and its reservoir, sit down and wait.

I have some that nest every year on my bridge. I have a RSPB voluteer who comes out to survey them every year. She was here a couple of weeks ago and assures me they are still all OK. PM me and I will give you the location. Far east of the Beacons

Wow, thanks. Wasn’t expecting such a great response!

They’re my favourite birds so I’d be disappointed to not see any. PMs incoming

Not relevant to main post but if you’re ever passing through Derbyshire Dales let me know. We’ve a brook near us that is home to dippers.

Lovely little things, always busy too!

I’m sure I saw some in the river opposite the car park below Grwyne Fawr reservoir last week. Just over the hill from @welshfarmer

They are occasionally sighted at Camp Pool, which is the sharp bend at the eastern side of the Glanusk estate downstream from the Nantyffin Cider Mill. Not a guaranteed spot though. The Usk does indeed slow down as it passes the Glanusk Estate, it widens out until it’s past Glangrwyney where it narrows and speeds up again. I’m sure one of the staff in Crickhowell Adventure Gear is a birdwatcher so if you’re in the town it might be worth popping in and seeing if there have been any sightings of dippers or anything else of interest too. Worth asking in The Bear too, a few locals in there are good at knowing what’s about.

Probably get the best result via welshfarmer though, a lovely part of the Beacons too!

@benp1 Nice to meet you and the family today. I really hope you got to see some dipper action on the stream and had a nice visit to the ruins. Enjoy the rest of your holidays

Not sure if this helps, depending on where you are, but there is a pair of dippers that have set up shop in a stream in the village where I live in Gloucestershire (10 mins from M5 J14, might be on your way back from South Wales depending on which way you’re going).  DM me if you want details, happy to share – usually see the male bird when I’m walking the dog early in the morning, really brightens up my day!
