There’s no way I’m reducing my sugar intake. Bloody loves it I do…. 😀

Given the present world population statistics, and the enormous looming pensions problems, wouldn’t it be better, having re-evaluated the whole issue, for the government to to tell the WHO to kindly shut up with their nannyish nagging, and instead be gleefully distributing free pies, cakes, beer and fags to anyone over the age of 40?

This was a pretty good take down of the “protein as bad as smoking” research:

    Very interesting:

The study claims to have adjusted for protein in general vs. animal protein to conclude that animal protein is the harmful factor and not protein per se. Call me suspicious, but I always check for conflicts of interest and the lead researcher, Dr Longo, has declared interests in (actually, he’s the founder of) L-Nutra – a company that makes ProLon™ – an entirely plant based meal replacement product.

Make most of your food intake relate closely to its natural state by eating as little heavily processed, additive rich stuff as you can. That’s the debate in a nutshell.
Sugar, processed fats, processed protein and highly reactive artificially created chemicals are generally ‘bad’, so eat as little as practical. Use up the rest by riding your bike/skis/board. If you exercise a lot, you can afford to take a higher proportion of your calorific needs in the form of simpler fats with less risk.
None of this advice is new.
Natural selection has groomed the Innuit and Masai to live well on their respective diets and there will probably be some subtle genetic grooming in each direction. Some Indian tribal groups live very long lives on low protein diets by our standards, eating little or no animal protein or dairy. And that’s despite having limited modern healthcare.
The rest of us are a bit more ‘omnivore’ than these groups. As we tend to mainly breed in our 20s and 30s, there has been little evolutionary pressure on us humans to develop systems that cope with 50+ years of restricted and artificial diets.
Do you know what’s the healthiest thing of all? Be happy!

What sauce for a XYZ butty? Is certainly a difficult question.

It really needs a Venn diagram or something.

    My personal rules are:

    Bacon butty = ketchup
Bacon and egg butty = HP sauce
Sausage butty = ketchup or HP sauce depending on mood
Sausage and egg butty = HP sauce
Full on BSE = HP sauce

There is a definite weighting towards HP sauce.

Inclusion of egg requires HP sauce. Sausage trends towards HP sauce, but I would not be angry if presented with a sausage butty with ketchup.

Not that I have any of the above often. Usually a once a month treat, which is why it’s important to choose carefully.

I tried ketchup on a BSE a while back and came away from it feeling a bit cheated.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you’re wrong. A bacon sandwich is a thing of beauty in and of itself, and by adding sauce of any kind you’re bringing corruption to paradise. Sausage is another matter – tomato sauce for me. If you’re going to go big, bacon and egg with beans is my vote winner.

When will people actually realise that a calorie neutral balanced diet is all you need to worry about. Eat some fat, eat some sugar, use salt, just not too much. Want to build muscle – have a bit more protein. Do a lot of exercise, have a few more complex carbs.

Eat meat, fish, veg, fruit, legumes, pulses, not too much processed food but have some junk occasionally and you will be fine.

Hey pondo, that’s a valid viewpoint. I did go ‘commando’ bacon butty twice. The quality of bacon and the choice of bread made a massive difference. I did appreciate the purity of the butty in this form, but the sauce adds an extra dimension.

Totally respect your point of view (and I take your point on the importance of the quality of the constituent ingredients) , but for me, putting any kind of sauce on a bacon sandwich is like making sweet love to a beautiful whilst forcing her to wear the facemask of another beautiful woman. Or, to quote the Little Dragon, it’s like a finger pointing away to the moon – don’t look at the finger or you will miss all that heavenly glory (where sauce = moon and bacon = heavenly glory).

    I live abroad.

They only sell bacon here in specialist “ex-pat” shops.

I would happily accept a bacon butty on defrosted white bread with marge and own-brand brown sauce right now. You don’t know how lucky you all are to have a choice.

    I hate you all… 🙂

What hell hole is it that denies you bacon?

The solution to your problems is homemade ketchup.

Cut up some tomatoes, throw into the frying pan once bacon is done, add chilli salt and basil. Cook untill mushy, mush properly add balsamic, reduce slightly. Add brown sugar to taste.

    Bacon acompliment of the gods.

    No mustard in that list.

And it’s missing black pudding. I admit, technically BP is a sausage variant – nut a significant enough minority to warrant separate entry, I’d say.

beanum – I feel your pain. I live in Detroit and finding proper bacon and not the streaky, thin American rubbish is a challenge.

You wouldn’t think it, but I do, however, have excellent access to HP sauce, Heinz Baked Beans and PG Tips.
