There is a genetic and metabolic element. There was a TV documentary about a study done. They gave this one lad a higher fat diet and rather than put on fat he just put on muscle doing no excercise. Others put on fat.
But mostly it's down to too many pies and not enough running.
iDaveFree Memberif i want to stay a bit slim, i have to ignore a bit of hunger and exercise lots. its a battle. most of the time i win. but i'd hate to be a fat shite so i will keep fighting. easy route in anything brings you nothing but short term gain and long term pain.
brooessFree MemberMy GP said to me once that she was seeing people effectively killing themselves because of their lifestyle (lack of exercise, poor diet).
What the article and the people asking for the law appeared to have missed is that being overweight is a health problem that for the good of the individuals involved, needs to be resolved. It's not the same (as mentioned above) as discriminating against people by race or sexuality. Being of African descent or gay is not unhealthy and causes no harm to individuals).
Presumably, the penalty for thumping someone for being fat is already covered under existing laws (assault, GBH etc), no?
ooOOooFree MemberHey, lets's all laugh at the anorexics too! Or XC Whippets as I believe they prefer to be called.

SmeeFree MemberThe upsurge in the number of fatties on the planet is mother natures way of helping us survive when the oil runs out. We'll have loads of blubber to use as fuel.
scotabroadFull MemberIt's all relative – if I lived in Tonga I'd be a whippet!! 😀
flippinhecklerFree MemberIts not nice to be called names, if if its fatual, I do believe a lot of children are overweight because their parents introduced them to bad diets, also genetics and big bones are rather pathetic excuses but, no matter what size you are, name calling is still upsetting. Shame more overweight people cant take control of their health and fitness and lose the lard for their own benefit.
KevaFree MemberI eat loads of food, probably eat five times a day and Im only around nine and a quarter stone. I try to eat pretty well, don't do cakes, custard, pies or take aways, just plenty of nutritious nosh 'cause that's what I like eating. I find unhealthy stuff makes me feel a bit sicky, sluggish and like I haven't been fed properly so I try to avoid it.
grummFree MemberPresumably, the penalty for thumping someone for being fat is already covered under existing laws (assault, GBH etc), no?
I agree with this.
It's funny though how these moral judgements about overweight people and the burden on the NHS etc don't seem to apply to smokers or people who drink too much.
StonerFree MemberIt's funny though how these moral judgements about overweight people and the burden on the NHS etc don't seem to apply to smokers or people who drink too much.
because even smokers and drinkers are faster over 10 yards than a fat bloke and you'd be scared they'd have yeh! 🙂
grummFree MemberYou see that's more like good-natured piss-taking I can appreciate. 🙂
simonfbarnesFree MemberPeople who exercise on a regular basis have a higher metabolic rate.

SpongebobFree MemberThey should stop eating "them genes". Far too many calories!
Should stick to pies instead.
esselgruntfuttockFree Memberf*ck's sake. Over-sensitive porkers giving the rest of us tubby bitches a bad name. Bring the abuse on, I'm too busy eating lard to notice.
Give me my pie back, at once!! & the chips!
You should hear what I get called at work, do I care? Do i bollix!HTTP404Free MemberIs it true people have to eat a certain number of calories per day purely to maintain their (over) weight?
My weight (not overweight :D) looks like its been kept in check with the amount of exercise I do but recently I decided to cut out the snacking and be a bit more careful with the diet and I've started to lose a few pounds. Not much – but I've noticed it.
But hey, it all adds up on the bike and when running.wwaswasFull MemberThis is interesting;
In 2007, Adam Childers, a cook at a restaurant chain called Boston’s The Gourmet Pizza, injured his back while at work. Doctors determined that Childers was overweight and without weight-loss surgery, the back injury couldn’t be fixed. Childers was advised to undergo weight-loss surgery and the company was forced to pay for it as part of the Workers’ Compensation claim.
The company argued that Childer’s weight constituted a pre-existing condition for which it was not responsible. But the Indiana Court of Appeals ruled differently, saying that the employee’s pre-existing obesity, combined with his back injury and subsequent weight gain, formed a new work-related “single injury” the employer was responsible for treating.
There was a similar case in August in which the Oregon Supreme Court ruled that an employer was responsible for paying for weight-loss surgery for an employee who needed a knee replacement but had to lose weight first.
Although such cases are still rare, I can see how paranoid employers might use it against hiring people who are considered “obese.” (According to data from The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about two-thirds of Americans are overweight, and 27 percent — about 72 million — are obese.)
The overweight, like smokers, are not protected by the ADA and haven’t historically had much success claiming they were discriminated against.
There’s also the definition of “obese” to contend with. As defined by the National Institutes of Health, you are obese if you have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 and above. (A BMI of 30 is about 30 pounds overweight.) A BMI is a person’s weight in kilograms divided by his or her height in meters squared.
It does seem to be an encouragement for employers to discriminate against weight if they offer private health cover.
willardFull MemberGiven the number of health complaints over and above the normal number that go with being morbidly obese, I'm not surprised.
Yes, it's a travesty, but I can see why a company, possibly stung once, possibly knowing someone else that has been stung, would think twice about hiring an obese person.
You see the same thing coming in now with small businesses thinking about hiring women of family-minded age. A lot of them are put off by the possibility of getting them trained up, then having them off with a kid for a year after dropping. Again, it's illegal to discriminate, but if you were forced to a) pay for the person to be away from the office for up to a year and b) pay for a replacement to do their job, would you not be wary of hiring them?
Going back to tubbies though, if I don't run/cycle/do weights/some other form of exercise, I start gaining weight, even on a normal amount of food (ok, maybe with extra bread, toast and cheese thrown in at work), so i make the conscious choice to run the shit out of myself most nights of the week, do weights and cycle so that I keep in shape and don't get too lardy.
I will not end up like my dad.
D0NKFull MemberThe unprovoked attack was not an isolated incident, say weight equality campaigners.
Sorry but I don't want to be the same weight as the guy pictured, thats a stupid campaign 🙂
Beating someone up cos they are fat is just a sign of some peoples intolerance of pretty much everone that isn't just like them, race, religion, sexuality, dress sense (emos), form of transport (cyclists) and the pub classic "looking at me in a funny way"
But yeah I can see the work discrimination may be a real worry.

My metabolic rate must be high because of the amount of food I consume relative to the size of me… and yes Im pretty much warm most of the time.

KevaFree Memberblimey no idea what happened there ??? must have grabbed a load of other stuff in the buffer and pasted it without realising! Im at work and got interrupted whilst typing, rather dangerous! could have had some other very none STW stuff in there..

FarmersChoiceFree MemberA chap I know who is a marine believes that all fatties who are that way due to over indulgence should be tied to the back of a land rover and be made to run until they are thin
OR
they fall over and the fat wears away.
A little harsh I feel, but I did laugh.
samuriFree MemberBrainiac, which is the scientific source for all knowledge, found that fat people do not get cooler or hotter any faster than skinny people.
juanFree Memberi am getting close to the 3500-4000 kcal per day and lets face it I am probably among the slimest on here.
So I take it there must be a metabolism issue somewhere.simonfbarnesFree Memberfound that fat people do not get cooler or hotter any faster than skinny people.
what were they measuring, given that a temeprature change of more than a few degreees is fatal ?
simonfbarnesFree MemberSo I take it there must be a metabolism issue somewhere.
you cannot actually separate metabolism from activity, as one supports the other. I'm very fidgetty, which obviously uses up calories…
barnsleymitchFree Member"What about vigerous onanism, which uses a huge amount?"
Tried that – still overweight, but cocooned in a bubble of sp**k!
samuriFree MemberI think they had underarm electronic readers Simon. I wasn't paying a huge amount of attention to be honest, the sight of a very skinny man and a very fat man sat in a freezer was far too distracting.
zaskarFree MemberMy GF has ordered me on a diet again.
3 months to get fit…
Dam.
AndyPFree MemberChrist, Waggon Wheels just get smaller and smaller. I had to eat all 6 with a cup of tea. Now then, is this thread still running?
