+1 on it’s own it seems to help a lot of people. When it’s used in running a country or controlling a big group of people to further the boss’s ambition/power/messed up moral code it is well ****ed up.

I’ve nothing against religion, but I do have a massive problem with some of the idiots who profess some sort of moral authority on the subject.

When do we find out who the new one will be? Will they go for someone a bit less outspoken? From a religious point of view, Rowan Williams is pretty middle of the road christian; I think it’s his forays into church vs state politix that were controversial. I suppose in a way that’s what Jesus did a bit, but without the huge foundation of the Church Of England behind him he was seen as a bit more of a maverick and not many people listened to him.

Williams is one of the few voices willing to speak out and be heard on issues of injustice and equality in this country, without being tied to a particular political party of political doctrine.

I admire and applaud that, irrespective of his religion

I’m no fan of the Church, but Williams always struck me as a fundamentally decent bloke. It’s a shame when good people go from high profile positions.

Its the other way round actually. Since the establishment of the Anglican Church (by the head of state of this country), The Archbishop of Canterbury is appointed by the British Sovereign, presently according to advice from the prime minister, and has no political power.

This. Although he might not be liked because of the position he holds he has been one of the most sensible archbishops for quite a while. Before he became archbishop he was speaking a lot of sense on the very same issues that are such hot topics now, but the combination of trying to move the church forward while holding it together must be almost impossible.

I dont actually remember him making any controversial statements. He’d occasionally say the world needed to be fairer but that obvious to all.

Generally he’d would/have to stick to being middle of the road in case the Anglian Church would just fall apart.

I’d have a pint with both. However I wouldn’t feel as if I would have to apologise existing to Dawkins. Both are bright men with the exception of the sky fairy thing.

No its not – its the exact opposite of religion.

I have no problem with consenting adults doing what they want in private. I have huge issues with people wanting to tell me what I can and cannot do because of some fairy tale they believe in.
