The former Labour minister Denis MacShane has been jailed for six months after admitting making nearly £13,000 of bogus expenses… He used the money to fund a series of trips to Europe, including one to judge a literary competition in Paris.

Ah, well, at least he picked up a bit of the lingo when he was in France so it wasn’t all wasted…

He changed his surname to his mother’s maiden name at the request of his employers. He was fired by the BBC after using a fake name to call the radio phone-in programme he worked on at the time. During the call, MacShane accused leading Conservative politician Reginald Maudling of being a crook, with the MP threatening to sue as a result.
