I’m in the market for a new bike as mine got stolen. Insurance has covered it and I’ve got $4000 AUD to play with. I have been looking at a new Stumpy 29er which an LBS has said they can do me for bob on 4k. Which looks great. However…. Looking at Facebook market place I’ve found an Evil Insurgent, locally for 3600 obvs second hand but the pic looks like it’s looked after, frameskin etc.
Spec wise it’s :-
Evil Insurgent Frame, RockShox Monarch Plus.
RockShox Pikes with upgraded rebound shaft, will also include the original.
SRAM Rail 50 wheels
SRAM XO1 drive train, cranks, derailing etc.
SRAM Guide RSC brakes, 200mm f & r, including spare pads
Renthal carbon Fat Bar 780mm
Renthal Apex 40mm stem
KS Lev dropper post, with Specialised lever
SDG saddle
Evil Pamela Handerson grips
MAXXIS Minion DHF and High roller, will include a Shorty n Minion SS.
It looks lush and I have no issue buying 2nd hand / pre loved. Don’t know much about these bikes though. It’s a large which is my size. I was looking at 29ers but something about this has me interested. $3600 is 1800 ish in sterling. What’s the opinons of the STW massive?
Evils come up short compared to new breed of lls bikes, don’t get me wrong they are low and slack though. Doesn’t mean it’s a bad thing just something to watch for.
The suspension action of the DW delta linkage is the best I have ever ridden and why my next bike will be another Evil, probably a calling.
I think there is an updated version of the Insurgent, the lb but all that gets is a boost rear end and water bottle mounts from what I can work out.
I’m not too fussed about the low n slack things. My old bike was a 650b 2015 Trance. I’m just thinking I can get a lot more bike for my cash going pre owned and the pics and write up tick a lot of boxes. Obvs it’s a much better bike than a new low end Stumpy would be. Just hesitant about a pre owned. Can’t see welds so I’m assuming it’s carbon? Just never been in the market for a “high value” bike so never looked into Evil as a company or see many around.
Yep it’ll be made of the black stuff. You’ll probably get a few replies banging on about cracks and rubbish warranty support. I checked that out before I pressed the buy button on mine (Following) and those reports all seemed to stem from early models with the latest stuff (all the DELTA platform) being on a par with other brands. I’m not riding mine while the weather is so rubbish and miss it – can’t wait to get that silly grin back the first time I ride it again.
It’s a V1 so is that classed as “early” model? I’d assume the warranty is with the original owner and wouldn’t get passed on. It’s probs outside warranty period anyway?
A mate of mine has one. He rides hard and fast and breaks everything -he hasn’t broken his Insurgent in two years of bike parks, overseas riding and everything in between. He’s really quick on it and with him riding, it seems to climb OK too.
I’ve ridden it a couple of times and it’s an absolute hoot when pointed down thanks to it’s slack head angle (he rides it in low setting, everywhere). As others have mentioned they’re not long bikes. I’m 6’1″ and the XL is the right size for me. I wouldn’t want it any shorter
Perhaps the Au model is slightly different? I’m not too fussed about Evils (old?) rep of poor customer service as I wouldn’t expect many companies to warranty pre used bike for another rider. Something about it just floats my boat. I guess ultimately if the frame does end up cactus, the rest of the kit is pretty stellar and could be transferred over to a new build.
Strokes chin in ponderment….
(The guys not responded to any messages yet, and I need to sort a bike tomorrow so time’s ticking)
Not as far as the cracking goes – those issues were with their first bikes like the Undead etc – when they started the ‘new’ range (basically anything with the DELTA suspension) I think they shifted production to a new factory and standards apparently improved.
Well it’s 11pm here and if the guy gets back to me sharpish then I can go check it out tomorrow morning. If not it’s back to plan A and the Stumpy (new) from a good ol’ fashioned “shop” as I need to get a bike sorted and tomorrow’s my only shot.
Probably already converted but go for it.. I had an Insurgent, sold it for a RipMo, regretted it, back on an Offering now. As others have already said, my next bike will definitely be an Evil (I’ve strayed once – don’t need to twice!)
OK I’m gonna pass on it. He’s had it since 2015 bought direct from Evil. It’s dripping with kit but I’ve looked at his facebook pics (stalker, much?) and he’s done heaps of enduros and he shreds. I can’t get past the fact it’s well used and 5 years old carbon, despite the spec and extras. I’ll probs regret it but decided to go with a new Stumpy new from a shop.
3D printed bottle mount is no bad thing. As already said the original (non LB) didn’t have bottle mounts and someone designed a 3D mounted one. It’s actually supposed to be really good.
If you’ve never felt the suspension of a Delta you won’t miss it. That’s all I can say. But once you’ve felt it – you won’t go back to anything else 🤣
5 year old carbon bike that’s had a hard life sounds a little risky to me.
Although I do love the look of the Evil bikes. I’ve just ordered a new trail bike frame and really liked the look of The Calling, but new the frames are just too expensive for me.
I’m sure you’ll enjoy the Stumpy – it’s quite a bit more modern than the Trance you had stolen so it’s going feel fast downhill in comparison.
If you’re having reservations about it being used, then the Stumpy will probably be the best bet.
There’s no difference between used carbon, or used alloy (apart from carbon is easier to repair). As long as there’s no major damage or cracks/gouges, it would have been fine.
The way you’ve described the Evil is that it has had no expense spared and has been well loved and used for it’s intended purpose over the years. That’s the way I’d see it 🙂
