  • Everything to do-SC fork? Marzocchi, BOS and Xfusion battle!

    Hi all!

This make everything complicated. Lets to start with what I will use for. I will purchase Banshee Rune V2 with CCDB air. I want to use the frame to do everything from AM, FR, Enduro to urban, bikepark, little XC even some DH. I use Dh bike as well and want to complement AM bike for my riding style.

There are three choices: air vs coil, height adjustability vs non, upphill vs downhill performance.

Listed models that Im open for (my budget covers below, around 1000 euros):
    year 2013

    BOS Deville TRC 160
    BOS Deville 170

    Marzocchi 55 TI RC3 Evo2
    Marzocchi 55 Mcro TA Switch

    Xfusion Vengeance HLR Coil
    Xfusion Vengeance HLR DLA

Weight is no issue for me, just a bonus. What makes my decision hard is ability to climb up.

For example, for downhill, all terrain performance would no brainer choosing Marzocchi 55 Ti RC3 Evo2. Though I dont know how much it is compromised for climbing up.

Service, maintenance is important for me because I plan use the fork for many years. Again Marzocchi seems as good choice regarding that. Coil is easier to service, height adjustability makes things more complicated if TFTuned says so.

All this depends on climbing performance and how Im willing to compromise for All-round performance.

    Fire away your thoughts 🙂

Just bought a Nomad and would have put the BOS Deville 160mm on it if I could have sourced one for less than $2200AUD out here, or a Suntour Durolux (Also not available out here) which is meant to be an excellent fork on a budget – with remote travel adjust.

My first choice would be the BOS as I want a fork that I can ride downhill on and if that means climbing to do it would let me climb when necessary. Have heard many good things about the BOS’s ability for climbing even without the TRC.

The Bos forks get great reviews on performance but servicing them seems to be an issue.

    Here´s a review of the MZ 55 RC3 Ti

i have a 160 trc deville on my nomad, and yes, when its working its very very good, however, it went back to r53 after a few weeks, r53 wernt able to change any parts, because bos wouldn’t give them any, however, they did fix the problem.
done fort bill wc, tdbn, most of whw, and it climbs pretty good, so very satisfied, just this nagging reliability issue
oh and you dont need trc btw

Personally, I would go with the rc3. The vengeance coil is a pretty good fork but nothing like as good as the marzocchi. Can’t comment on the bos other than, even in France you don’t see too many.

I’ve been playing with a 55 Ti RC3 recently, and its very good. Doesn’t seem to be a drag on the ups as it sits so nicely in the middle of its stroke and no complaints on the downs. Hopefully it can only improve as it beds in further.

My choice was the devilles, however, it seems like they have struggled with their recent rise in popularity. Heard of earlier versions being reliable for ages with not an ounce of servicing however it seems like they’ve had problems recently with seals and other issues. Mine have just gone back to France due to loss of oil leading to rebound and compression issues.
Lovely forks though. Once they sort the current issues and get a UK importer they’ll absolutely be the best.
Have 140mm 44 RC3 ti’s on my other bike and they are superb too, love being ridden hard.

service and customer service is turnoff for me regarding BOS products. so it is off the list.

I have asked Avalanche Downhill Racing if they can offer adaptor + cart for 55 serie. If they do, then a cheap 55 and Avy cart seems good option.

If not, 55 RC3 may the way to go.

Im riding old 888 38mm with Avy cart 😉 so Why not emulate that down to SC fork level.

Didn´t think of that, let us know how it works out.

I have some 44 to rc3s on my hardtail, they are amazing. They do bounce a bit more on the ups than some forks but that’s just because they’re so plush. You just have to climb without bouncing on the bars too much. You def won’t be disappointed with them

Im thinking again .. lets assume if I still want to try Deville 2013.

What conditions is TRC useful at? I saw one 160 TRC 100 quid cheaper than 170mm.

I dont worry about custom service, it will come to one point that I start to service myself when it is standard seals, bushing etc.

The reason is 500g weight difference between Avy equipped 55 or it depends on reply from Avalanche. I think I will have both 😀

I change mind sometimes, I know but I like to test a few choices. Speaking of rear shock, it is hard to resist Bos VipR and compare to CCDB 🙂

    Marzocchi, BOS and Xfusion

Is that like a top gear special? “Tonight we’re testing the new Masserati, a Nobel and a Skoda Octavia 1.4 diesel against each other.”

Rock Shox Lyric’s, I love mine.

I’ve had both the marzocchi rc3ti (non Evo) & Bos, and whilst caning it on rough DH there’s virtually nothing between them. The rougher and faster the track, they both feel remarkably similar. Loads of support, no diving or anything, just supremely controlled. The biggest and noticeable differences are at lower trail type speeds. The marzocchi feels plush and more sensitive to body shifts – the LSC feels a lot softer. Whereas the Bos is A LOT firmer.

I now just have the Devilles (2nd set). My preference is for a bike that is very stable around its sag point and only uses what travel it ‘needs’ to use. Deville front Vip’r rear is perfect for me.

I have the TRC version and as already mention, it’s pretty much unnecessary – they’re very controlled as they are.

As an endnote I’ve also had lyrics MiCo & MoCo & the more basic MoCo felt a lot better to me – I never felt happy with the MiCo.

    EDIT:

Ha ha, love the analogy, though you seem to have included a Ford Escort at the end 😉

I have some 2010 55 RC3 Tis and they feel good but I still haven’t managed to get them set up right and feeling as “right” as my old boxxers. They make that marzocchi squelch as well.

i’m using 44rc3 ti on a cotic BFE. Feels more supple and active than either of my Rebas or Lyrics. It works really well and i wouldn’t want a travel adjust system on it, as i don’t notice any problems ascending.

Never tried an BOS or XFusion fork, but I love my 55 RC3 ti FWIW. If you’re looking for a fit-and-forget, hard-hitting plush fork for riding hard that doesn’t fettling every 5 mins, it’s the one to go for 🙂

Bos works well with Bos, but IMHO I’d be looking elsewhere for a fork to compliment a CCDB. I’ve not tried a CCDB Air but my coil is a good fit with my RC3 Ti as they are both supple especially when deep in the travel. For climbing with them a smooth technique is best whereas the Bos pair felt firmer and allows more aggressive climbing/sprinting. I’ve not tried a Lyrik but my older Fox 36 RC2 feels pretty good with the CCDB as it is also pretty supple… But not as much as the Bomber.

    thanks for replies.

Looks like Deville will be the fork for me. I have owned several Zocchi since year 2000 and know what do you mean by transfering weight.

I need “race” setup setting so I’d like to test VIPr shock too. Im not sure if CCDB Air is very similar to Coil, but I can sell the shock if I dont like 🙂 Rune V2 sells with two shock options.

Two questions: what I do lose if I choose 160mm Tapered TRC because it is hard to find 160 non TRC? extra big weight? too complicated to service compared to TRC?

Does anyone know weight difference between 160 TRC, non TRC and 170mm. I would like to know if both 160 and 170 have same fork lenght (545mm?)

    thanks again!

btw I take Noble all day!! 🙂 I dont need grand tourismo.

Avalanche Suspension replied that they need gather data for 55 serie. It doesnt mean definitely “no” so there is hope for you 55 owners. Once it is out, Im gonna test it 😉

I have a Bos Deville 170 and absolutely love them….
There performance is superb and because they are 34mm stanchions there is no weight penalty over 36’s
I have given them a few good workouts over some pretty varied terrain..Cairngorms, Golspie, Laggan, Torridon etc and they are flawless…. No issues climbing but sublime on the down 🙂
I know there UK support is bad but they are open bath and you can use fox 34 seals on them so pretty easy to DIY service.

Worst case scenario send them to France.

I had fox 36’s float before and they were great but after 2 years use they have worn stanchions and damping issues, they have also had new bushings….

Can’t help you on weights but I am sure they will be published on the BOS website.

    Good luck with your choice,

I’m jealous, I liked the Bos combo when I tried them. Kind of wish I’d gone for them…

I’ve run lyrics, all sorts of 36s, bos deville 170 and I am now running 55rc3 evo ti.
The bos are amazing and about 400gs lighter than the 55 but if you want the best performing fork then the 55 gets it.
Love em. They do look a little nasty though and the high/low speed compression are both adjusted by one dial which is an air loaded cartridge and creates quite a bit of stiction. I’ve emptied mine completely and they’re smoooooth.
