Another unintended consequence of Brexit – UK cities forced to withdraw from the 2023 competition.
Sure, the cities would/should have identified this as possible risk.

To be fair, if Hull can get to be it, it must be a bit of a Pisstake award at the best of times, no?

Dunno why it matters really, Brexit voters are anything but cultured anyway.

Just change all the references of Europe to Commonwealth on the paperwork and promo stuff instead.

Leeds – the 1st Commonwealth City of Culture. 😀

Hull is the UK city of culture, we can carry on with that 🙁

Liverpool was European city of culture, that was ace and left a lasting legacy

Agreed was very good for Liverpool

My local brexiter MP complaining MK no longer eligible after all the work (and money) they’ve put toward the bid.

Liverpool won it a few years ago, now were almost invaded by well educated, intresting europeans on day trips, long weekend or even working here, sadly the brexit muppets have thrown the entry key away.

They should be forced to change the name to the European Union City of Culture

    Europe Yes, EU No

They should be forced to change the name to the European Union City of Culture

    It’s open to cities from:
    EU (and Candidate) Member States
    EFTA Member States
    EEA Member States

So yeah, let’s call it the EU-EFTA-EEA City Of Culture. That has a nice ring to it don’t you think.

How can anyone be surprised by this? As soon as the brexit vote came in they should have stopped working on their bids. However it is framed (“Europe yes EU no” nonsense) the brexit vote was a massive two fingers to the rest of Europe so good on them for taking their toys away and reserving them for true friends.

Because as of today we qualify as we’ve not left the European Union yet and nobody knows upon what terms we will leave…if we actually ever do. We may end up with a EFTA type of deal…who knows.

It’s just politicking by the EU to try to influence public opinion in their favour while the negotiations are on. If not why didn’t they DQ us as soon as we voted for Brexit, or later on when we had a better idea the shape of the deal. The timing is obviously aimed at hitting the bidding cities at the worst possible time.

The referendum was to leave the EU – we were all told that we wouldn’t leave the single market, we’d still be in the EEA. So it was perfectly reasonable to continue working on their bids – they weren’t to know that a narrow vote to leave the EU would be transformed into a cast-iron mandate to leave everything vaguely European.

Isn’t the rhetoric (in the absence of any facts because the government isn’t giving any) around us leaving all the mentioned qualifiers? So the EU are right to say bugger off then.

“..has come completely out of the blue.” says Hilary Benn, despite the article also noting that:

In December 2016, the UK government said the competition would “run as normal”, but did warn bidders that it “may be subject to” the Brexit negotiations.

Does this mean we’re not European anymore, as in part of the continent of Europe? I mean we were part of the continent of Europe long before we joined the Common Market, have the EU changed world geography?

No, it means we are not eligible to take part in an EU run programme that requires entrants cities to be in the EU, EFTA, EAA or be candidates for joining.

Am I allowed to find this funny? Just a little bit?

What did we think would happen?

The Brexies have trashed this country. Sooner or later they’ll start to realise that. This is definitely not the worst thing the Brexies are responsible for.

Its odd the more vocal you were on leaving the EU the more surprised and upset you seem about this

Does this mean we’re not European anymore,

No and no one has claimed it has

Basically if you dont buy a lottery ticket you cannot win the lottery – why is this having to be explained to people?

There is of course nothing stopping us unilaterally claiming our crappest city to be the European City of Culture once we leave but I fear they might laugh at us and not lend us the official bunting.

It’s funny how Brexiters act exactly as if we’re being forced out of the EU, not leaving voluntarily*. You’d think, with all the amazing opportunities to come with Brexit, they’d be happy to settle the leaving bill quickly, be completely happy to be out of the City of Culture, be delighted to sort out the leaving issues quickly so they can get on with gambling in the green fields of Brexit freedom.

Instead, they keep whining that we won’t be able to keep using all the EU things they said we didn’t need, and were better off without.

It’;s almost as if they know it’s going to be a colossal, decades-long mess, but they just don’t want to admit to themselves quite how badly they’ve screwed up the country.

*Of course us Scots, among with the Northern Irish, Londoners, Gibraltarians etc aren’t leaving voluntarily, we’re being forced out because the largest partner in this partnership of equals tells us to.

Surely it’s an expected and quite reasonable outcome as the awarded city receives not only the title but EU funds to develop and deliver the cultural legacy.

Brexiteers now accusing the EU of being unreasonable while post brexit wanting the cake and eating it?

Press release from Leeds Council does not refer to them having identified exclusion resulting from Brexit as a risk.
Typically, a bidder in any large scale project would run a risk register with probability of event occurring and likely costs if it does; register would be ‘dynamic’ so subject to ongoing amendments.
This would/should be part of the cost projection.
Would be interesting to know the total abortive costs incurred by the UK bidders.

    From the Mash:

‘MILTON Keynes has been advised its European Capital of Culture bid would be unsuccessful even if Britain stayed in the EU and paid £350m a day.

Confirming the UK candidate cities would be excluded from the contest, an EU spokesman said: “It’s a shame about Dundee, Belfast and Leeds. They have some culture. Not what we Europeans would necessarily call proper culture, but they had the right idea.

“Nottingham was an odd one, but we honest-to-god just assumed that Milton Keynes was a joke.”

The spokesman added: “Anyway, we would hate for the people of Milton Keynes to think they lost out because of Brexit. That would be unfair and unhelpful to them in the long term. There was never the slightest chance they would even be considered.

“We’d be more likely to award the title to an abandoned bus in a scrapyard in Mogadishu.

    “Was it actually a joke?”
