Sold a bulky item on ebay last night. Winning bidder has suggested cash on collection, any reason not to do this?
    negative rep?
Against T&Cs and possibly some sort of penalty from ebay?
Some sort of rip off attempt?

If you would recommend it how do I close the auction without a rep loss?

    Sounds okay to me.

What is not okay is Paypal then collect because they can pull out the “item did not arrive” trick.

PayPal’s PR department have played a blinder in making people feel (although they are not sure why) that getting paid in CASH is somehow going to be a scam 🙂

but as there would be no paypal payment they couldn’t do this….could they?

Neal obviously cash seems like it should be scam free but not sure how ebay/paypal penalties and possible neg rep (not that I have much ebay rep to begin with)

I have had no issues with Cash on collection. Always cleaner to get it via PayPal as it avoids any negotiations when they come to collect. But my experiences have been positive.

    That’s what I mean.

If you have the cash you’re safe ebay are yet to send a team round to wrestle your cash from your cold dead fingers because a buyer is a lying toerag.

But you open yourself up to problem such as charge back.

You won’t have any proof of postage so you’re knackered.

so how do I resolve the listing if I accept cash?

Print out the item listing and ask them to sign and date it when they are collecting it? A friend of mine did this a couple of years back just to safeguard himself ‘just in case’

Big amounts of cash and Paypal, for collected items, always have a risk.

I recently sold a high value item via eBay, or rather the guy wanted to BIN so we agreed a deal. He paid with Barclays Pingit which is so much better than Paypal or cash. Straight into your bank account, not pissing about counting cash/worrying it’s legit, and no risk of a ‘item not received’ claim.

Its of no consequence – the only evidence ebay/paypal are will consider is proof of postage. You can get someone to sign anything, you can photograph them, do anything you want – theres no part of the paypal / ebay dispute system that enables you to submit that ‘proof’.

I insist on the item being paid for before I supply the adress for collection. Reason? Despite winning the bid, some ebay idiots (and they seem to be the majority) will change their mind and not turn up, or want to try and haggle the price down on collection. Very annoying when you have described the item accurately.

Cash on collection is dead simply, winning bidder turns up pays the agreed amount and takes the item.

If they want to haggle then they can just **** right off and I will relist it , with unpaid buyer notice.
There’s no point arguing with idiots.

Take the cash and verbally agree to not proceed with the sale, cancelling the sellers fees. ;o)

Agreed, if they haggle I dont budge, on principle. Then you have the hassle of relisting, and dealing with the next bunch of idiots.

Get them to sign the listing print out. If they claim not received. Inform PayPal that you have evidence and will be contacting police re an attempted fraud and if monies are removed from your account you will regard this as an unauthorized withdrawal.

But then it’ll probably be fine. If there were actually as many fraudulent transactions as there appear to be on STW then ebay would cease to trade.

    Nothing to do with Paypal.

How can Paypal take funds from your ( the seller’s) account to repay the buyer if he fraudulently claims the item wasn’t sent to him after he paid cash and the seller handed the goods over when the buyer didn’t use Paypal in the first place and as such, Paypal have absolutely nothing to do with anything?

Paypal can only reverse a transaction, not randomly donate money to people.

I don’t see how this could go wrong . If they take the item and then claim not to have received it all you have to do is say they haven’t paid . I must be lucky because I’ve used eBay to sell and buy stuff for years and have never had a problem .

I only ever accept cash on collection on ebay auctions. Why would a seller want to take fees etc oit of a face to face transaction??!

I was just about to list a ebay/collect auction and bingo ebay have removed ‘other method’. Now its just Paypal, cheque (do you use cheques?) Or…a postal order. Again, when did you last use this?

So Im face to face with a buyer and he has to electronically send me money and I get a cut taken out of it.

So…from now on I’ll take ‘best offers’.

As above: to ensure the person that won the bid 1)actually turns up the pick up the item, and 2)pays the agreed price. From experience, it can save a lot of hassle. I don’t expect ebay to offer their service for free, which is what you seem to be expecting? I hate ebay because of large number of idiots that use it, but you would not have found your buyer without them.

Ebay still get there fees on a face to face, it just avoids the additional paypal tax.

If people collect from me, I *only* accept cash or bank transfer.
