At the vets for the first of her 2 hip replacements.

Labrador, she’ll be 3 in September, found out she has hip dysplasia.

Waiting for a call to see how the operations gone.

All being well we will get her back tomorrow but could be Saturday if she needs more rest.

Not much point to this post but there usually isn’t on STW 🙂

    Hope she gets on OK.

    and make sure they’re insured!

Becomes increasingly expensive as they get older (particularly if you have more than one dog). We were paying more for the two dogs than both of our cars together!! Had a policy for a while that you paid 30% excess on and eventually decided to knock it on the head completely.

If you do have your dogs insured, make sure you have life cover as it is amazing how many ailments are lifelong (particularly with pedigree breeds). A lot of insurance policies will only pay out for a year.

5.5k per hip plus racked up 1k on X-rays / medication so all in for today’s operation looking at 6.5k ish.
Still the other side to be done around Xmas time :-0

Deffo, last friday the big dog had to go in for x-ray, endoscopy and a bit of flushing out of the lungs.

‘That’ll be the best part of £1000 please Mr & Mrs owners of flea-bitten money pit.’ (having said that we wouldn’t be without him!)

Ours got something called ‘water diabetes’, local vets couldn’t work it out so he went to ‘specialist’ ones, glad I was insured as it cost a fortune. He is now on pills for the rest of his life, which unfortunately weren’t covered by the insurance.

They were nearly £200 a time (every six weeks!) from our vets, however what I found out was that I could ask for a prescription for 6 months worth from the vet, then buy them from the chemist at asda for £80 – still not cheap but at least I wasn’t being raped for them.

This is one reason my dogs aren’t insured.

A labrador with wonky hips? Are breeders still churning these out to an unsuspecting public?
Not just labradors mind; most pedigree dogs seem to have their inherent faults and their owners expect some other mug to foot the bill.

I’ll post an after pic .. She will be Shaved and looking like a poodle at the rear!

We have another lab who will have lonely night without her tonight

She’s lovely; good luck Stox Dog! I shall hug our pup extra hard this evening.

Its crazy how much vet things cost! Has anyone seen the SuperVet programme on C4? Makes your eyes water how much these advanced procedures cost.

Who else is footing the bill? You obviously don’t understand how insurance works as most will insist on a hip score and adjust the premium accordingly.

I would hug mine (2 labs and a labradoodle) but I’m in Sicily 😉

Thanks woody .. .. We need to call in an hour to see how she is but the procedure has been done (with a minor hiccup that’s been rectified) so fingers crossed for a good result when we call

Guy at work has a spaniel with legs on one side shorter than the other so had to get th legs lengthened (I have no idea). All sorts of expensive. The dog had external scaffolding which she managed to get caught in the cage and yank out on Christmas eve. Take the expensiveness and multply by a silly number. His insurance company are probably still crying over it.

Pretty sure that’s a fair amount more expensive than a human hip replacement which is just silly.

It’s more than 10x that for a human one. Gawd bless the NHS.

Glad yours has made it through the OP.
My Lab has hip dysplasia.. one of the worst cases the vet has seen.
When discussing surgery as an option for him the vet wasnt even sure he would be able to dislocate his hip for the OP. In the end i decided against it and just dieted him down to a very svelte 27kg. He’s 8 now and starting to struggle quite a bit more. I know his days are very numbered and sometimes hope he dies in his sleep before i have to face that day where his legs decide they’ve had enough and i have to get the vet round.

    Labs rock…

Cloudnine – really sorry to hear that 🙁 must be difficult and obviously it’s going to become even more difficult for you all in the future.
Do you give him medication? Tilly seemed to get on well wit tramadol these past few weeks (as you’d expect!).

The specialist told us Tilly’s HD was severe so she was a definite case for surgery. Also she has her age in her favour hence our decision to go ahead with it.

    I wish you luck

He’s on metacam (for the last 2 years) and the occasional half a tramadol if he’s really limping around. He still manages to go scramble up on our bed or try and swipe food off the edge of a worktop.. so he’s not quite reached the end of the road but its just sad to see your best mate hobbling around when inside his head he wants to play and chase balls.
He’s been spoilt rotten his whole life BTW.. and been ace with the kids who he just even lets our 18 month old take food out of his mouth or sit on his head.

I had to have one of my labs put down this year. Bone cancer in her jaw. She wasn’t insured but I wouldn’t have wanted her going through all the different treatments a vet would have thrown at her had she been insured.
My dog(s) love(d) to run next to me when I’m on my bike, they live for their walks when they can’t anymore I feel they have lost their quality of life. I won’t drag it out for them, after all they can’t tell me if they are in pain. My now only dog a male lab is getting on now at 10, he can’t go far with me on the bike anymore about 5 miles. But as soon as that shed door opens he’s jumping around like a pup! Long may it last!
Sorry for the rambling post I should be asleep . . .

It’s around 6-15k for a human one private, or 3-6k cost to the NHS, apparently.

    Hope everything goes OK

My Lab had around £5k spent on him when he was a pup with ops on his legs and has had £100’s recently with nail bed infections and has now got arthuritus.

£600 of X Rays a couple of weeks ago and now £300 of hydrotherapy.

Pet Plan cover for life. Excess has just gone up from £75 to £105, but he is 8 now so it does go up with age.

He’s quiet this morning as the hydrotherapy yesterday has found muscles he never used before 😀

IIRC 3-6k is the cost of the prosthesis.

Hope all goes well OP. Insurance is always a good idea. Times are tight and almost stopped ours. No sooner did we discuss it then ours Lab/Springer X cut open her leg on something on the trail.

Dog recovering from operation earlier that morning. Not a happy camper.

Hope she makes a great recovery.

I recall one of the labs we had when I was young. He’d always wag his tail. All the time. Turned out he was using it to propel himself as his hips were completely disintegrated. Poor brave sod was put down to save any more suffering.

Looks like we are getting her home tomorrow . She’s had a good night, comfortable they said and ate some food.
She’s been out for a wee this morning (with the help of a sling under her belly as a bit of support) but she has stood on her own feet.

Looking forward to getting her home !

Well things ain’t quite gone to plan.

Tilly was x rayed again earlier as the vet thought there was an issue. Turns out the hip wasn’t seated correctly so kept popping out so it was Back to theatre this afternoon for the third time.

He seems pleased with the outcome. Hope to find out more later. Needless to say she won’t be home tomorrow.

IIRC 3-6k is the cost of the prosthesis.

add in 45-60 minutes of laminar flow theatre time, surgeon, probably a registrar, anaesthetist, couple of scrub nurses, couple of other nurses for recovery and looking after used swabs and you’ll probably still come in under the price that the op paid.
