Cohen slaughtering Trump before Congress, extraordinary

    martinhutch

    And we’re off!

Cohen doing his best to spill the dirt on his former boss to Congress in his new role as a penitent sinner.

Or just a spurned lover getting his own back?

Oooh some lovely stuff in there already:

“He is a racist. He is a conman. He is a cheat… I was actively negotiating in Russia for him… Trump’s personal lawyers reviewed and edited my [false] statement to Congress… He lied about it because he never expected to win the election. He also lied…because he stood to make hundreds of millions of dollars on the Moscow real estate project… Lying for Mr. Trump was normalized, and no one around him questioned it. In fairness, no one around him today questions it, either… He asked me to pay off an adult film star with whom he had an affair, and to lie to his wife about it, which I did… [Trump] thus wrote a personal check for the payment of hush money as part of a criminal scheme to violate campaign finance laws… declares himself brilliant but directed me to threaten his high school, his colleges, and the College Board to never release his grades or SAT scores… He tasked me to handle the negative press surrounding his medical deferment from the Vietnam draft. He claimed it was because of a bone spur, but when I asked for medical records, he gave me none and said there was no surgery… the following comment. ‘You think I’m stupid? I wasn’t going to Vietnam.'”..

I reckon the draft dodging could be the thing that actually upsets his base the most. They don’t care if he is racist, a conman, or paid off porn stars. Many of them probably admire him for it. But dodging the draft? Oof

I think Champ Kind gives a wonderful summary of what has just happened.

Thats been known for a long time and oddly doesnt seem to do any damage. Not just Trump but dubya before him (getting into the Texas air national guard).

Yeah I know, but to actually have him reported as sneering about it as he asked Cohen cover it up might be a step beyond for some.

Does twitter not work in Vietnam? Or maybe he has broken it with an extreme torrent of fury and vitriol.

I think a lot of people have no problem at all with draft dodging. I’d have dodged the draft for Vietnam and so would plenty of others. It’s just that trump combines it with all sorts of mad hawkishness, denigrates actual veterans and decorated war heroes, wants to send other people’s kids off all over the place, and loves to play dress up. A draft dodger who said “Vietnam was horseshit, I won’t do that to you or your kids” would get on just fine even with a lot of serving personnel.

Also compared veteran’s experiences of Vietnam with his victory in the battle against picking up the clap in Studio 54.

I dunno, implying people who did go, to serve their country, were stupid probably won’t win him any friends among folk who didn’t have a choice.

I think that applies to any of Cohen, Trump, Guiliani, Stone, Pecker…

    Wowsers! That’s quite some testimony.

I do wonder if it will make any difference – we all knew all this anyway, right? Trump the liar, conman, racist, draft-dodger and general all-around scumbag. I wonder if it will change anybody’s mind?

The stuff about Russian business dealings is interesting, one has to assume that what he’s saying is aligned with what Muller has already in his report.

Part of me thinks it’ll be one of the smaller issues that brings him down….. I’d love it to be something as ridiculous as using his charitable foundation to buy his own portrait

Entertaining but I don’t think it will make any sort of difference, either for his supporters or detractors – he’s already far from a person you can be on the fence about. The Republican and Democrat questions were mostly very cringeworthy, I know it was all for show but some interrogation from a neutral source would have been nice to see, although I guess that’s what he’s done with Mueller.

I watched about 15 seconds on the news this morning and had to turn him off. I mean “India and Pakistan” have been “going at it” “we’re gonna help them out” blah blah “Venezuela” … bloody idiot made no sense whatsoever!

Apparently Trump thinks Kim had nothing to do with Otto Warmbier‘s death.

“Some really bad things happened to Otto — some really really bad things. But he tells me that he didn’t know about it and I will take him at his word,” Trump said, referring to the North Korean dictator.

The president added that Kim told him that he “felt very badly about it.”

Fair enough then I guess? I mean a US Federal Court ruled he had been tortured to death by North Korea. But I’m sure that was just a misunderstanding.

But how could he have been? He wasn’t in North Korea when he died!

(I’m minded of the scene in Vice, where Cheney is discussing the Geneva convention etc ‘The US does not torture suspects. So if the US does those things (water boarding etc) to suspects, then that isn’t torture.)

If he’s so super rich, why did he have to repay Cohen in instalments?

It’s almost as if he’s a total fraud.

    tomhoward

Probably to get under various people radar? 1 payment of the full amount would be obvious. Instalments, not so much.

Installments to make it look like a retainer for legal services.
Total amount of installments double the original payment due to 50% tax bracket.
I wasted hours watching it up until the recess then realised I should probably go to work.

That’s obviously indefensible but I guess if you’re going to be fair you should list all the violent acts that could be attributed to Trump supporters etc this may include several shootings and various racial attacks.
