“Shutting down the federal government” is another way of saying “Drain the swamp” to his supporters. Another way of looking at it is that aligning the federal government with those opposed to “the will of the people” (i.e. his core support) then they’ll see future announcements about rolling back “big government” as a good thing. This despite those institutions being the very ones protecting them against the unbridled power that Trump craves.

There was a piece in the guardian today interviewing Trump voters. The vote for him was in pretty much every case, an anti-politics vote. And the more the media and ‘the establishment’ attack him, the more these disenfranchised people back him

The US right was absolutely delighted at the idea of the gubmint being closed, then they started to discover what that would really mean. “Why can’t I go to this war memorial?” “It’s shut” “That’s a disgrace!” “Yep.
