  • Dilemma – sold my car to a mate and it's gone wrong; big time!

Oh if his argument is that he wants a brand new part then ask him if he wants to replace anything else in the car with new parts at the previous owners cost just to be sure. Its all old/used FFS.

Help him find a cheaper alternative through forums and breakers- NO £-contribution.

You sold him the car at mates rates after all.

After all, even if you were a specialist-mechanic with knowledge of Disco's how could you vouch 100% for a cars future mechanical reliability?! Anyone would agree this. Hes not really a friend to you. He should have mentioned it then said 'if you could help him track down a cheaper/used part or help on specialist forums'.

2/3's- I wouldnt want to keep in contact in the future. Good friends you keep, I really don't think your display of textbook over-friend is required for someone who asks such things.

Hi Peter. i think your being more than fair offering 50% when he got it cheap in the first place.( remind him of this)
i hope it get resolved without you loosing a mate.

We had the same ABS problem on the works Volvo. Took it into the dealer and they wanted something like £1200 to replace the ABS controller and "it still might not fix it". So we took it to a Volvo specialist and got the known problem fixed with a bit of soldering to the original board for £120. I'm told that it effects fords too.

Worth a look and could solve your problem.

Edit: For the record if your friend wants you to pay towards fixing it after you did him a deal already, he's not really a friend. I've got friends that would never do this in a million years, but i've also got "mates" that would do this over half a bottle of wine.

Don't let him pull your pants down.

Yes- hes already got a grand out of you on the car now wants more now he owns it.

Hes a liability as a friend. just remind him you lost a grand selling the car to him and you'll help him find a part cheaper. Thats more than enough.

I think there's a theme here – how much is a friendship worth?

Also, how do you judge how much of a friend somebody is?

Someone being pushy about a large sum of money I doesn't sound like a great mate to me., without any real right to do so

    A scenario:

A friend of mine has decided to upgrade his 3yr old 32" Plasma TV to a new 40inch LED flatscreen.

Its worked fine for 3yrs and hes been impressed with its picture and sound quality.

2 weeks after I buy it the TV cuts out.

Should I ask him to pay half towards a new TV for me or give me half my money back?

I assume he got a good deal on the motor in the first place?

You assume rightly; I let it go for about 1k under market value And he knows that.
So he's still quids in if you went halves. Sorry but he's pulled your pants down when he bought it and now he's doing it again.
I understand you're trying to do the right thing, but a true friend wouldn't ask for money.
I knew someone who swapped a car for a crate of beer, 1 week later the buyer comes back and says the "big ends gone", seller says "so's the beer".

Mark you get the tv cheaper from them, make them pay half the repair bill and it still cost you less than the list price for second hand tv…thats what friends are for 😯

Reminds me of that Top Gear episode where they drove to New Orleans in crap cars and then gave the cars away. IIRC one of the recipients tried to sue the Beeb because the car was crap.

Or maybe my memory is crap.

He tried to sue on the basis that he was expecting a Camero? but received a Buick? apparently.

Exactly what I was thinking. I don't have 'mates' like this, thankfully.

If someone came to me and said this, I'd just laugh TBH.

sorry…but your "mate" is being a dick!

If he was really your mate, then he wouldn't ask…..he is just trying to pass the cost onto you

he wouldnt do it if he'd bought from any old joe down the road(or if he did, he'd be told where to go)

I'd not be putting my hand in my pocket for anyone who bought a car off me. I'd be bloody furious if I sold someone a car at below the going rate and they started coming back with faults.

It's a private sale – everyone knows there is no warranty or comeback on a private sale unless the item is not as described.

When you by a car there's a chance something will go wrong at sometime in the future which is reflected in the price. I bought a car from my brother after getting several dealers to make an offer and I gave him the best price he could get and assumed all responsibility for it after that.

So you owe him nothing and he's a twunt for even asking – however there are some people like that; always looking for someone else to take responsibility.

Since when did a standard Deafener or Disco have more then one diff to lock? No wonder they kept bouncing out on bumps!

Had a mate at the garage ring me the other week, "Ive a customer with a 110 here with a steering fault, its fighting back going round bends"
Me.. "front diff, CV's or stuck in diff lock- i'll nip down after i've dropped the wife off at work"

Got there, grabbed the keys and found the customers lunch bag hanging from the diff lock lever.

Why don't people learn how to drive them properly before buying the things on the strength of the image, advertising and what the blokes on the Fast Show say?

For future reference, when you sell a car, print this bad boy out and get a signature on it: http://www.theaa.com/motoring_advice/car-buyers-guide/cbg_sellerscontract.html

You can then tell him to go and swivel.

The pedant in me wants to point out that 'Sold as seen' is a phrase with no basis in law.

The sensible bit of me wants to remain schtum.

The pedant in me wants to point out that 'Sold as seen' is a phrase with no basis in law.

Isn't it just the colloquial shorthand for "sold without any warranties or representations as to performance, quality, condition etc?". I suppose a sale can't be done without any terms because you always have to have an implied term of good title – unless you explicitly didn't – but then the contract would be void for illegality –.

If you were a dealer, yes. Private sale is caveat emptor.

And the pedant in me says he has no claim for repairs on a used car bought in good faith! 🙂

Something similar happened to me recenrly. Bought a family saloon from a friend of a friend. He said the cam belt had been done at 50k, but had no record/proof. I said that I'd therefore assume it actually hadn't been done, and do it ASAP. 2nd day after purchase, the cam belt fails, and I have to shell out £1500 for a new motor.
I told the seller what had happened, just to keep him informed. I never had any thought to ask for my money back/a contribution.

After all, as soon as you sign the document, it's your car, right?

On the subject of mates, I think I'm secure enough with mine to tell them they're being unreasonable. He's being a d*ck for asking for money, and the OP is being a bit wet for taking that kind of sh*t.

Sold a road bike to a friend and then 3 months later complained the rear rim broke? No way.

Same friend tried it on with not paying me rent money, not paying his tv licence when I rented the flat cheap to him as a friend…well we're not friends and he didn't pay his last months rent but then again I did sell 2 sets of concert tickets delivered to the address after he moved.

Never ever do business with friends-lessons learnt.

I think you should buy the vehicle back if you have the money and repair the car and sell at full price.

If you were the buyer you could easily think the seller has ripped you off.

Paying 50:50 is a good gesture too as you sold him a car not road worthy even if you didn't know it would happen.

    Oh 😆

Ps. Yes do sell to friends but you sell with

'Its done me well/worked fine during the time I had the car/bike etc however I obviously DONT have a crystal ball- understand? So if it fails tomorrow – tough'

    YES/NO.

Talking of 4×4's – Notice how I never tried selling my old car on here?

mate of mine lent me his bike for a race (all of mine are too big and bouncy), the fu(king thing snapped in 3 places literally riding along.. i offered to somehow pay for replacement/fix or at least pay for building up a new frame (labour) but was refused flat – his view was that it was either going to happen to me or him, just unfortunate that at that time it was me! Muckers wont screw you around trying to ask for money when somethings screwed – f-ck him off..

So do i… mwhaa haaa haaaa

Not even half of the toys i've owned… Only one i ever came near to getting stuck was the Mog when i dropped the passenger wheel down a hidden mineshaft. I was ready to go and get the John Deere to pull it out when i saw clear line out if i reversed.. Select low 1st reverse in diff lock and out it popped!

He tried to sue on the basis that he was expecting a Camero? but received a Buick? apparently.

IIRC it wasn't even the wrong model, s/he was given a car but it was listed the wrong year, TG thought it was an 89 but it was an 88 or something, so s/he tried to sue. Cheek.

I sold my old car to my sister, my dad drove it the 350miles to her house no problem, practically on her drive the exhaust blew £150 replacement. Never ever gonna sell to family or friend again.

is this sorted now Peter ?

I found best price I could for the parts required offered with warranty and said I would meet 50% of that cost and that my offer was a gesture of goodwill on my part and in no way suggested any acceptance of any responsibility for the vehicle. He has accepted that, begrudgingly I might add. He is very aware that he needn't ask again, the vehicle is no longer my reponsibity, and that he has bought an 8 year old vehicle, not a new one. I actually work for the same company as him, we currently have a business-like relationship!
