looking for a book on aeroplanes as a present.

Almost but not quite – but supposed to be very good, and anyone into WW2 would be bound to enjoy it:

Reading that it gets terrible reviews, I always thought it was ace aged 10!

First Light is a stunning read. A little low on pictures, though.

What age group is it for?

Well, in that case, First Light, by Geoff Wellum. Brilliant book.

    +1 First Light.

I don’t agree with his politics, but “Bomber Command” by Max Hastings is an excellent history.

If you want a reference book, this looks pretty good but it starts just post WW2

I thoroughly enjoyed the following non-fiction documentary type books –

Vulcan 607 – about the long range mission to the Falklands
Phoenix Squadron – by the same author about HMS Ark Royal and a little known mission to save Belize.
Apache by Ed Macy – the incredible stories of some UK Apache missions in Afghanistan

couple of off the wall suggestions…

Basic Aircraft Recognition, or the later Aircraft Recognition Manual by the same author, published during the war – interesting and reasonably priced.

Old copies of Observers Guide to Aircraft are cheap to buy as well.

And WW1, not 2- Winged Victory is a novelisation of Yeates experiences in the Great War, hard going in places, but a world away form Biggles.

First Light is one of the best books I’ve ever read.
Also try Wing Leader by Group Captain J E Johnson or The Big Show by Piere Closterrman (sp)
