I’m sick to death of the frickin “healthy” oven chips the wife makes, can someone please recommend a smallish deep fat fryer so that I can fry myself some proper chips.

One of those that only use a teaspoon of oil but fry them rather than bake them, probably more than you want to spend though 🙁

Edit, just had a look, try HERE.

Price isn’t an issue, I just want some proper chips. 🙂

Get the cheapest and smallest you can find. When it gets too claggy with baked on oil throw it away as its a nasty job to clean. Dishwasher just turns it into solid plastic.
I’ve just put my chips in for a really low temperature long simmer. 3 hours ahead of dinner. After 30 mins I’ll take them out and cool them. Then I’ll warm them in the oven while resting the steak before a short 170deg fry just before serving. Crispy and soft inside!

As a slight aside, how do you dispose of a fryer that’s full of oil?

Chuck the oil down the nearest road gully and leave the fryer in the nearest kids playground *

*or at least that’s how they do it round here

I would go for Kitchen Craft Stainless Steel Chip Pan but make sure you know how to use properly to avoid burning down you house … 🙂

I just use the local chippy. A lot cheaper and easier to clear the mess of disposing chip wrapper into the bin 🙂

Though I know what you mean by can’t beat home made deep fried chips.

Nah, adds to the character, like a tea-stained mug.

My local tip recycling centre has an oil bin. I pour used (cold!) oil back into the oil bottles and take it up there when I’ve got a few.

Actually if you want to do it on the cheap, ask if your local fire station has a safety initiative going on. A few years back, ours were visiting homes to give a free safety check, and we ended up with new fire alarms, extension leads and a deep fat fryer, which has since packed in so its back to the good old chip pan.

I bought one of these a year or so ago…

I had a look at the flash/expensive models but all of them had the same set up for heating the oil i.e. the element is immersed in the stuff. I assume this is to keep the temperature accurate or something. If the flash ones had a hidden element I would have gone down that route. As is, the Sainsury’s model is a cheap version of the Tefal or Heston’s design.

I don’t use it anymore, seemed to gain too much weight far too quickly, though I put that down to the triple cooked chip and its obvious moreishness.

If you use groundnut oil instead of sunflower oil you’ll get more batches before you need to change it. 10 – 12 fries as opposed to, say, five with sunflower. IME.

We got a cheap Argos one. Beautiful home cooked chips. Even dumped aunt bessies roast spuds in and they were quite tasty. Asda spring rolls taste better deep fried rather than in the oven.
It’s great for lazy days. But they are not for the health conscious.

Make sure you open a window as you don’t want the house smelling like a chippy.

The nearest chippy is 5 miles away. 🙁

I have permission from my Cancer Specialist to eat whatever I like to keep my weight up. 😯

Dibbs – Go nuts then. Nothing wrong with deep fryed food if eaten in moderation. Everything that tastes good seems to be bad for you according to the health freaks.

Google triple cooked chip recipe – Heston’s is workable. Try making triple cooked french fries, too (approx 6mm width). They come out extremely crispy if you add some apple cider vinegar to the boiling water. It also adds a subtle vinegar flavour to the chip – built in, as it were.

Lovely stuff. I miss the crispy yet fluffy bad boys but I enjoy being slim a lot more.

Obviously you’ll start to deep fry everything after discovering chips – mars bars, button mushrooms, Bic pens etc. You won’t be able to resist.

Edit : And good luck with whatever cancer treatment you’re having.

Mum had a pan full of lard that lived in the cupboard under the sink when not in use. That worked quite well.

I’m not allowed a deep fat fryer (she who must be obeyed says so), and those “Health” fryers have some very good and bad (martmite) reviews let alone they look the size of a small car. I have survived on aldi curly fries (oven cooked) but discovered Aldi’s Specially Selected Chunky Oven Chips, which are pretty damned fine.

I’ve always wanted a deep fat fryer* loaded with lard, to make proper 70’s chip…

*after seeing my m8’s pan of oil go up in flames and the panic it induced (in me, not him luckily), I’d prefer something you can’t overheat and set fire to
