Looking for the best way to hide plaster cracks without a re-plaster job. Cracks in plaster are above a radiant type gas fire. Tride sanding and filling but result was very temorary. The wall has since been re-plastered but surface cracks have reappeared. If I wallpapered over them with a chunky type paper, how would it last being over a gas fire? The wall is sound, no exterior problems..cracks only seem to be in the surface skim.

how big are the cracks if only small, sounds like the plaster is drying out too quickly? Have you had the fire on? Sanding and filling shouldn’t fall out try some thick lining paper under the paper and allow it to dry out properly.

Cracks are only small (narrow…couple of mm at worst), but not level…ie…one side of some cracks raised as if surface skim is coming away from base plaster. Larger crackes closer to the gas fire. Let it dry out unpainted for many weeks when it was re-plastered during summer (no need for gas fire)

Rake and clean out the cracks to a decent depth- 5mm or more. Fill with a good proprietry filler such as Tetrion or mix up one yourself with a filler powder thoroughy mixed in with PVA adhesive plus enough water to make it workable. Apply when fire is off. Smooth as normal. Allow at least 12 hours to dry. Sand if need be. Paint. Relight fire. Job’s a good’un.

Strip an replaster is the only way IMO. skimming over the top of existing plaster rarely works – hence the cracks appearing.

dry lining with plasterboard and then skim might be the way to go if you’re going to rake the old off. imo of course.

Demolish the house and re build is he only way IMO. A strip and re plaster rarely works when you have hidden subsidence – hence the cracks re appearing 😉

Either fill them with a flexible filler such as caulk or………

Contact Kevin Mcloud (?) off Grand Designs and say that due to excessive dryness of the atmosphere where you live you’re going to build a sub aquatic mansion from wattle n’ daub, wiht a thatched roof, also you’re partner is preggers and is due bang on dead line day for the build and your budget is “only £371,000.96” and you WILL hit it.
