  • Dartmoor – any shops left to buy food in Postbridge or Widecombe in the Moor?

I’m planning a trip for a few days on Dartmoor.  It looks like the convenience shops in both these places might have closed recently (or since I was last there).  Is that the case?

Is the anywhere to buy some basic provisions around the Postbridge area?

    Thanks

i think the shop in postbridge is seasonal not fully closed. don’t rely on that though.

there is a small shop/post office in princetown which is only a couple of relatively easy miles from postbridge and open normal hours.

IME though, even when they are open, they are pretty grumpy in there.

    I’d aim for Princetown.

Good pies in the Prince of Wales.

Drop in and see Sam&Jim at Ice warrior.

dewerstone shop does good coffee when it’s open, fox tor cafe used to do a good breakfast and is bike\mud friendly.

I’ll be hiking, but sounds like it’s still worth the detour!

Me and you have very different definitions of a “couple of easy miles”. It’s about 6 miles between the two and uphill* all the way and the weather can be totally different at each end.

As others have said the food is good in The Prince of Wales or look at staying lower down in Moretonhampstead where there’s an abundance of pubs and a mini-supermarket.

(*I mean, it’s Dartmoor so it’s uphill on the way back too.)

    *relatively…

chagford/moretonhampstead direction have a bit more going on, but its a bit of a desert in that strip in middle unless you want an ice cream and a cream tea.
