  • Damp cellar in hot weather. Solutions?

I have a cellar in my rented house that is normally dry as a bone but this hot weather has caused a lot of dampness on the floor. I store all my bikes plus kayaking gear and climbing gear down there so I need to solve the damp issue.

The cellar is two rooms. One small 6ft x 4ft, one big 10 ft by 14ft. It has bare brick walls with crumbling whitewash and bare cement floor. It is not ‘tanked’ and has one window that opens in to a ‘well’ in the pavement. It also has a vent that feeds out under the floor boards of the dining room into the back yard.

Any damp patch specialists (not like that!) got any simple, cheap solutions?

(I’ve had a small fan down there today for about 6hours and it seems to be having a small effect)
