I was driving through Tilbury yesterday and the verges were laden with detritus.

Nearer to home, the problem is not so bad, but still completely unacceptable.

Three days ago I was driving around Lake Tahoe in Nevada and noticed the clean verges and the roadside signs stating "$2000 fine for littering".

We SO need to toughen up on dicouraging "pond life" from throwing litter from vehicles!

Couldn't agree more. Whilst out running yesterday in the beautiful lanes near my house i came across a massive pile of old microwaves, computers and other rubbish dumped near a footpath style, carried on for my run, got home, got the car went back and got it and took it down to the local council dump. My good Karma for the wknd hopefully.

I once came across 2 or 3 cars, about 10 baths, 2 sets of skis and whole heap of other stuff arranged in a circle around a knackered old caravan. There was someone living in the caravan. He looked angry that I'd chanced upon him in the trail network and his dog looked angry. I left sharpish.

These were dumped near a local mountain bike trail.

Flytipping is getting to be a worse and worse problem round here particularly since the council cut back rubbish collections and got rid of their free bulky item collection sevrice. Some of it is shady builders, but some is clearly just w'kers who for some reason can drive to the middle of the countryside and dump stuff in a hedge, but can't go to the local tip.

It's interesting to see how few people know where their local tip is.

If you've got anything you want to get rid of that is still in remotely serviceable condition (CRT monitors etc) Freecycle is great.

Last summer I came across enough wood for a decent-sized bonfire piled up across a narrow country lane, blocking it completely for cars but with just enough room for me to squeeze by on the bike. The council chaps who were watching over it until a big enough lorry came to take it all away reckoned it was the entire interior fittings from a caravan. Quite what had happened to the outside was a mystery… 😕

Found a hammer in a ford (river crossing sort) once, found a cage plate from an old XT rear mech once too. It was on part of the Wight Max XC route on a bit of a climb. That was their race over then!
What i dont get is why people will drive for 10 miles in the middle of nowhere to dump an old fridge etc, when they can take them down the road to their local tip / recycling facility and drop them off for free. Boils my piss that does.

One of our regular night rides starts at 'The Burnt Out car'- which often perturbs new-comers a bit! The ride then heads off down to the river crossing and past a memorial to a person who 'loved this place'- my view is if they loved it that much why has it been despoiled with a plaque set into the rock and a bunch of wilted flowers.

The ride then heads off into the forest and past loads of discarded plastic objects, much of it agricultural but there also used to be a kiddies kitchen set and some dolls too. I find it all a bit sad to see toys discarded in this way.

And all in the Brecon Beacons National Park.

People just seem to have no respect for the country any more…

Most recent finds were two dead badgers within the space of a mile. And the obligatory car footwell contents of cans, packets and wrappers.

There will be a lot more dead badgers soon in North Pembrokeshire if the Welsh Assembly gets its way.

Happens all the time here – the tips at the bottom of the hill, yet the lazy pricks still will stop in a small layby half way down the hill to chuck mattresses by the side of the road

**** sake the local tip has been opened to anyone now (van or car) as long as you not a obvious business, as there so much fly tipping going on. As mentioned you only really notice it when cycling.. whilst cycling down a lane between trails we came across a transit pickup (he acted a little weird but when 6 HID lights come down the rd, most ppl are confused), didn't think anything of it until 100m later ther in the middle of the lane was a pile of crap totally block the lane to road traffic..
Then last week @ the local country park, just a muddy car park, was a lorry load of rubbish, I dunno how they even got in and out with the car park with a lorry!

Broke my ribs last Good Friday on a pile of fly tipped rubbish. mainly fencing, conifers and blue water pipe.
It was a little used trail called the Ridgeway!

Unexploded 2" mortar on a Bridleway crossing a field which had just been ploughed. Called the Police who brought in the Royal engineers to dispose of it along with a couple more mortars and hand grenades they found when they did a sweep of the area. Made a nice crater when it all went up. The whole area behind where I live was used as a training ground for the Canadians who took part in the raid on Dieppe and later D Day. We used to go metal detecting when we were kids and often found mortar tails and bullet cases but this was the first live ordnance we found.

I would suspect apart from regular littering that most flytipping is by people paid to take people's rubbish away (tradesmen, skip hire co's) rather than average joes dumping their own rubbish. If people have the means to put the crap in a car they might as well got to the tip, for free, and dump it there, it takes less effort an imagination. Anybody disposing of other people's waste for them has to pay to get rid of it, they're the ones who have a financial incentive to dump it illegally.

Up on the Gleniffer Braes there is usually circa 10 burnt out cars at any point in time all over the place 😕

I work in the construction industry (well what's left of it at the moment) and just the other day I was chatting to a site manager who regularly gets people to follow the waste contractors' vehicles to check that the waste is being taken to where it’s supposed to go and not dumped – this shouldn't have to happen but it is good to see construction companies taking corporate responsibility for their waste 🙂

its probably more selfish than selfless. If the waste contractor were to get busted for illegal dumping then so would you, whether you knew they were fly tipping it or not.

When I was younger I found about 6 car tyres. I thought it would be a good idea to drag these bag home, my dad was not happy when he had to pay to get rid of them 🙄

Around the local nottingham woods there is so much fly tipping. With the strangest being a couple of entrails (sp?) intestines etc… from a large-ish animal, no animal mind…

Skip hire companies?? Erm, don't they charge a hefty sum for provision of a skip and subsequent disposal (including landfill tax). Wouldn't they get slammed if they dumped 4 tonnes of rubbish by the roadside? Do you ever see such quantities of waste in one spot? No!

The people who charge to take your rubbish away are often of no fixed address and allegedly "travelling". I have a different name for these people, but using this is now deemed racist (which it is NOT). Nuff said!

It's easy enough to blame councils (well I grant you, many of them are useless), but the main issue is Brussels issuing directives pertaining to lanfill/recycling. The councils adhere to these because they are terrified of getting sued. Or maybe councils have nothing else to keep themselves occupied with.

Time we got out of the EU, or maybe our government should ignore the Brussels Europrat nonsense!

Yes they charge it, but there are (shady) operators who don't want to pay it out again. With most skip hire all you are really paying for is delivery of the skip, collection of the skip and the tax, unless you are able sort your waste into recyclable loads like timber or rubble, in which case pay for delivery and collection and nothing else.

I was on the hunt for a factory unit to hire last year, went to view a place in renfrewshire. Over the weekend the lock on the gates had been cut, when I turned up with the agent on the monday there were mountains of flytipped building and demolition waste. There must have been 40cu.yd skips being emptied being emptied there day and night.
