Snapped my collar bone yesterday, was given co-codamol and a sling and told to report to the fracture clinic in a week. Looking at the xray, the break is like T but squashed a little, I just can’t see a way that it is going to knit?? Anyone have any experiences with collar bone breaks?

Anyone have any experiences with collar bone breaks?

They’re all different, some will be OK in a few weeks, others take much longer

Can’t really see you getting any answers here

I thought the same there was about 15mm-20mm displacement. It healed fine. Got a big bump but other than that its OK 🙂

After the laser my friend was riding the Alps about 3 weeks after breaking his, no idea of how bad it was though.

You have my sympathy, I have done both mine, both healed fine in 4-6 weeks.

As already said, there are no 2 breakes the same, that’s what the fracture clininc appointment is for, the specialist will assess it and give you a prognosis, listen to them, that’s what they are paid for.

When you go back in a week they will probably look at it again and decide whether to leave it to heal like it is or if real bad they will use some pins to realign it. Most people’s heal just fine, albeit with a lump.

Broke mine 8 weeks ago, it’s still healing, have a slight lump due to it overlapping slightly, but not as bad as some i’ve seen, I have 95% of movement back but still waiting for the new bone to fully harden.

Yes, I fractured and severely displaced my clavicle this summer, I had to have surgery to have a plate fitted because the bone was almost and compound and was never going to knit. If yours does knit and they usually do, you’ll more than likely end up with a lump just where your rucksack strap needs to go. I think my plate is irritating a tendon or nerve which can be painful, but I’m back on the bike, I’ll have surgery to have the plate removed in January.

I know a guy who broke his with a torsion movement of the bone that caused the bone structure to shatter and, in sections, totally disintegrate. it was repaired successfully with plates and bone grafts. He’s still a very active cyclist, so there’s hope.
