  • Clear coating a steel frame for the 'bare' look – anyone done it?

Has anyone used a form of clear coat on a stripped steel frame? Is it possible? Any tips? and most importantly, any pics ?

I’ve done it on BMX forks back in the day, looked okay but went a bit dull after a while. Nitromors to strip, fine sand paper to key the surface so the paint sticks well and a few coats of clear lacquer (light rub in between coats). You might want to here from someone who knows what they’re doing as I don’t 😛

I like the look of this clear powder coat…

If I did it again I would make decals by masking the frame with pre cut adhesive vinyl and letting it rust the decals 🙂

There’s a raw finish on the 456 Evo.

I think they sum it up well…

Note :: Raw Finish is designed to have manufacturing blemishes and might not appeal to all. Also, it’s extremely likely that some degree of surface rusting may appear in time, though due to the only process that this frame has been through is the first surface treatment in the paint process, the action of that rust on the frame is only as bad as the action of rust on the inside of a painted frame. The frame is coated with a matt laquer, which being slightly porous will allow the steel tubes to corrode, but this, we consider, gives a patina of age and wear (like a nice wok) rather than it being a problem.
If you have an issue with this, please select the painted option.

    456 linky for completeness…

cool pics of Rivendell btw. I like this finishing style but I’m not convinced Matt clear wouldn’t be even cooler than glossy PC… :undecided:

Candodavid, what finish is that? Anybody reckon that would be possible to do on an inbred that is currently red, so would need stripping.

    Looks nice Candodavid 🙂

See what you mean andybloomer, this will look nuts when it’s fisnished. Polar opposite of a raw steel frame 😛 http://www.skunkx.net/siteimages/18/9/1/189130/4308306.jpg

My new Kona Unit came in a raw finish. I really like it.

When the frame was built it was wire perished and polished and given a coat of clear powder coat, it is over a year old now and is ageing a treat
