In response to the original question: A bit of both.

It’s a really impressive tool, but it is also something of a novelty and the results tend to have a some quite convincing bits but be patchy overall.

I think the real question is why this has been made available to the masses for free? Who’s funding that and why? I suspect we’re all part of a sinister experiment, the purpose of which is still unclear.

Or maybe it’s just a freemium model and they’re making money by selling advanced features. 😀

it’s not really a mystery! They already have a lot of established products which they charge for. It’s pretty clear that they’re using free access a) for free beta-testing/feedback purposes and b) to show people how good/useful it is so that they’ll then pay for it when given the option (& an incentive). Nothing particularly sinister , just business! 😃

Already is, believe there’s a limited tech preview of BingGPT available somewhere (not really been following or tried it yet though!)

I know several people will small businesses using it to write blurb for their websites & social media posts. Not everyone is skilled with language and it creates more engaging & professional content than they can do themselves! Not putting anyone out of a job as they weren’t paying anyone to do it for them anyway. 😃 Just a really useful tool.

I think this is going to deal a heavy blow the print and design industries, much like DTP put thousands out of work when that arrived.

Kinda borderline my area of work so I’ve been having a play with it. Some things I’ve done/I know people have done/stuff I’ve read:

– something on LinkedIn yesterday where someone had asked it a number of questions from the point of view of a reader of a certain newspaper. The difference between “describe a migrant as a Guardian reader” to “describe a migrant as a Sun reader” is pretty scary but I guess you get out what you put in.

– asking it to write a strategy paper about something. In 10 seconds it spat out around 10 bullet points which perfectly summarised an exec summary for something we’d paid someone hundreds of pounds a day for 3 months to do. Yes the lower level detail was missing but we could have saved ourselves loads by using ChatGPT to create the high level points we could then delve deeper into. Funnily enough, I have a strategy paper to write in the next few weeks…

– a few people I know have used it to “help” their kid’s homework. Child has an essay to write about the Great Wall of China etc. Ask it to write an essay about the Great Wall of China. Then ask it to write an essay about the Great Wall of China as if you were a 13 year old. Thats where it gets interesting… because it does! The “explain x,y,z as a child” etc is pretty cool/terrifying…

🤷‍♂️ I don’t know what else you want, then. Tom Scott is a highly respected blogger and creator of investigative / nerdy videos, he’s been doing it for years if not decades. I’m genuinely surprised that you’ve not come across him before. He probably can’t help his face any more than the rest of us can, so your only argument here is seemingly either “I don’t like videos” or an objection to the title (which he explains in the video).

To a point, I get the video objection and I agree with you. If I want to (say) learn how to set up some complex software then I can read a guide considerably faster than I can listen to a video of someone reading a guide to me. There’s a generational gap at play here, my old apprentices would routinely jump onto YouTube if they wanted to learn something and were genuinely surprised that they could use Google as a work-related search tool.

But Tom’s videos aren’t vacuous clickbait. They’re interesting and entertaining (IMHO, etc). You’re throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

I’d certainly take these with a pinch of salt right now. Can’t see anyone revealing the full transcripts that have led up to these monologues! The AI is basically telling you what you want to hear, so I think there’s a degree of “prompt engineering” going on. For example, ChatGPT is normally reluctant to engage in speculation or philosophy, but with just a bit of needling I’ve managed to get it to come out with this:

Couldn’t agree more. Perhaps it’s my age but technology seems to be outpacing our meat brains so fast that I don’t see it ending well. Humans simply don’t have time to adapt, not even a single generation.
