Just took delivery of a Charge Spoon Saddle, based on the many positive reviews. This is to replace the arse hatchet of a saddle that came on my Ragley Big Al. The Spoon looks very similar shape to the Ragley own brand saddle, which was pretty uncomfortable. The Spoon feels very hard and quite minimal.

    Options:

    1. Keep, it’s a comfy saddle that softens up with time and a good shape.

    2. Return, it’s tough as old boots and no better than the Ragley own brand.

I run these on all 3 of my bikes. Never a problem for me.

The charge spoon design is I believe available with lots of different labels from lots of different brands. If it looks and feels the same as the Ragley saddle, then it probably is.

    I’d return it.

Out of interest where did you order it from as I didn’t think they were made, under the charge spoon label, any more.

I ordered one today from Leisure Lakes after snapping my Fabric Scoop in half.

I ran loads of them for years until I switched to the Scoop but for 20 quid I’ll give it another try.

I find the spoon OK, I get along better with WTB saddles but the one spoon I do own has been adequate.

I think it’s maybe a wee bit overrated and obviously some people’s bums will always fit it better than others.

Same as Madison Flux , I like ’em both 👍

If you get on with it, you’ll find it fine. If you don’t, then it’ll be bloody terrible. I tried one on a couple of different bikes.

Bloody horrible things – using them feels like my arse cheeks are being cleaved apart.

But my mate has used one for probably getting on for 15 years and swears by it

Jaffl – Ordered from Tredz, they are currently £18. Looks almost identical of the Ragley own brand, a good chance they are the same saddle with different branding.

I’ve got three Charge spoons on various bikes and find them really comfy, I also have a Ragley big al and have no problems with the standard saddle.

I had a Selle Italia saddle on a new bike once, it was like a medieval torture device and I honestly thought I’d removed my left testicle at one point!

I love em, but know a couple of people who think they’re the devil’s saddle!

Good for me though, as they gave me their ones 😁

I like the Spoon and have one. It is exactly the same as the Ragley branded one on my old Trig, I compared them side by side.

I’m one of the ones who has been running Charge Spoons for years and swears by them.

But if a saddle isn’t for you straight away (but seems to suit a lot of other people*) – there really is only one question to answer:

Do you feel able to put up with it for a month or two whilst it reshapes your barse?

*I.e. the design would appear not to be completely batshit.

arse cheeks are being cleaved apart

Mount horizontally, not vertically on the seatpost. You’ll thanks me later.

I bought a spoon as an emergency get me home saddle when I couldn’t face any more of the break on process on my brooks one Friday commute. Never took it off, comfiest saddle I’ve ever had.

You’ve reminded me I was looking for a new one, I’ve lost mine somewhere down the line somehow.

The Spoon was always a popular one. I used one for a while but found it got uncomfortable on longer rides (4hours+). The Flux was similar but had more padding, don’t know if you can still get them.

I’ve found that padding/hardness has very little to do with comfort, it’s all about the shape. In fact, deeply padded saddles can feel plush to start with but tend to get painful on longer rides.

This is true. Shape and fit is everything. Padding just lulls you in to a false sense of comfort before severe arse pain kicks in.

My motorbike is the same. The seat is wonderfully plush and comfortable but after a couple of hours I can barely lift myself off the thing.

Yep, +1 to everything about shape/fit rather than padding. A firm saddle isn’t a bad thing; a firm saddle that’s firm in the places you don’t want it to be is awful. And that varies per person. A saddle that feels rock hard but fits well could be highly, highly comfortable.

I run a Madison Flux which seems to be exactly the same as the Charge Spoon but with a cover that is slightly tougher. It’s also very similar to generic saddles you get on a lot of bikes, and a cheap one that Brand X did

Run them on all my bikes apart from my Brompton

I was a big spoon fan BITD. Even bought a ‘fork’ for my road bike (well named like sticking a prong up your….) but then discovered Ergon. Couldn’t find the Ergon I wanted this time around, so also went with the £20 LL Spoon. See how it goes, but I’m pretty sold on Ergon saddles and grips now – they are expensive tho.
