    I've managed to strip one of the threads in my drive side crankarm and rather than replace it like for like (alivio 8 speed) was wondering whether i could upgrade to a 9 speed crankset with a view to eventually replacing the whole transmission bit by bit.

    Would a 9 speed crankset work with my current 8 speed transmission?
