I’m thinking of starting to wax the road bike chains. Does anyone have any experience of it? What mixture of paraffin/ wax is best and how long does it last?

Just get a tin of putoline. Been doing my road chains this winter, pretty impressed.

I normally go with a putoline hot wax in winter, and squirt in the summer.

However, this summer, I switched to Smoove Lube and I’ve not felt the need to switch to the winter putoline yet..

Same weight plain candle wax and liquid paraffin wax in a cheap rice cooker “cook” for 15/20 minutes, hang to cool, refit.

Does that mix stop all the wax flaking off once it’s cooled?

That GCN video is a bit crap IMHO. Neat paraffin wax will just flake off straight away.

Much discussion and some recipes here:

I do my commuter with a mixture of paraffin wax, beeswax, gear oil and molybdenum disulphide, and it works nicely. Beeswax (~20%) and gear oil soften the wax and stop it flaking off. (Although,as noted in the other thread, if you have to buy the ingredients, you may as well just buy Putoline.)

    liquid paraffin wax

What is that, and where do you get it?

Just use the putoline – its cheap enough when a tin will last you many years

Apologies not liquid paraffin wax just liquid paraffin !

Nice smooth (creamy almost) with the same weight mix and does not flake off.
