we stayed here, easy access to Dalbeattie (track and 7mileish offroad path to village), lovely costal walk to Kippford (pubs/cafe – which would also make a lovely mtb bimble/explore with some nice shell beaches)

Balloch o Dee campsite just outside Newton Stewart, James the guy that ran it was a top bloke.
