- Bust forks after doing a trade.
So I recently traded some old forks for some pikes on getting them they looked good, road them today and bang oil every where, seals are shot, lock outs gone, rebounds gone, oils pissing from the chamber and wont hold air,
Basically if it can leak or not work it doesn’t
they go up and down but no resistance.Took them appart to find 1 seal nearly gone and the rest in a bad state. the oil that was left was brown and full of grit.
Soi have swapped a perfectly good set of forks for a duff pair. where do you recon i stand?
needs fully rebuilt £80+ if i do it, if i can.
or morethan the forks are worth from the likes of loco or tf.
what to do,
there 1.1/8 and i need the u turn ortravel adjustso if anyone knows of some similar at agood price let me knowPosted 5 years agoBrickManMember
This is pretty much what you get most of the time with used forks/shocks, people just don’t service them anywhere near as often as they need to be, hence I only buy them either new from a shop at silly low sale prices (like thos £700>299 fox from on one), or silly low low low used via full paypal payment so if they are a bag of pap then I have a leg to stand on, or if they are actually OK then I’ve got a set of good forks at the right price.Posted 5 years ago
Same for whole bikes too, people describe them as good and charge good money, but if your buying them blind (ebay/stw/internets) you generally end up with £hundreds of mechanics bills, or at least a drivechain and a BB if doing it yourself.
Would contact the other person and ask why they are a bag of pap and suggest trading back at their cost for postage. Thats if YOUR old forks were actually as good as they should have been as well.DancakeMember
Since getting my fingers burnt with a pair of Foxes, I now I buy cheap forks that are honestly declared knackered for the same reason as above.
– I have had some great fixer-uppers this way
Its a real pain for you but I am not sure you have any comeback.
edit. (read post below) I have had evilhomersimpson’s seals and they were finePosted 5 years ago
My forks were immaculate, Litraly just been serviced not even back put back on the bike.
the forks were swapped and i was told they hadn’t been used for 8 months but were working perfect before that.
I expected to have to replace a o ring or 2 but nearly every one in the forks is nacked.
I’m not winging about the other party as all was above bored, and we both understood the risk, But realistically what are my cheapest option,s and whats a similar fork.Posted 5 years agomikewsmithSubscriber
anything used comes with a full service factored into the cost for me. No matter what the seller says.
sorry for the post horse bolting advice but would probably suggest getting them serviced, anything you “buy” to replace in the second hand market will need servicing anyway.Posted 5 years ago
They were described as
“had these for about 2 years not used very much and work like a dream would swap for some xc light weight forks there for 26” wheels and have lock out, damper and travel adjusters “
As i say he later said they hadn’t been used in about 8 months.
Anyone know of some good deals on forks 140mm adjustable downwards, with 1 1/8th
or if the reba seals will fit pikes as thats what evilhomer is sellingPosted 5 years agoMowgliMember
Reba seals will fit, yes. I take it they are air Pikes? I think that needs more specialist tools than the coil ones unfortunately. A full rebuild of the coil type (seals, oil, o-rings, crush washers etc) would be about £50 I guess. Air ones might be more if you need special tools.
If the stantions are good it’s worth rebuilding, as they are easy to service and could last a long time. Also, if you rebuild, you’ll be very good at servicing them in the future.
PS check the bushings are ok, as that a pita to replace yourself.Posted 5 years agoamediasSubscriber
seals for RS forks can be had for peanuts if you know the sizes.
If not then the genuine kits are ~£20, give yourself an afternoon to watch the videos, check the manuals and do a rebuild yourself, they’re not hard to do an as long as it is just seals and not anything broken they’ll be back to good as new!Posted 5 years agoCoyoteSubscriber
Last pair of 2nd hand forks I bought were a nightmare. Got them off here too. Advertised as recently serviced. They were, just very badly. Also didn’t realise that they were of the famous “abomination” era. But I bought blind so sucked it up and moved on.
Worst forks I’ve ever had mind.Posted 5 years ago
anyone know where i can get these in the ukPosted 5 years agoT1000Member
its a common problem on here, maybe some people really believe that the goods they are selling / trading on are in good condition…
my experiance with forks has been very similar…… likewise on frames not been used in 6 months or ‘recent tf / mojo service’ means its got a sticker on the fork or shock from 3 years ago….. and that bearings are fine means that half are seized….
its frequently said in these type of threads buyer beware….
best option is to go and see the goods… photo’s are good or service reports from Mojo and tf are handy as welll …. look at the posting history on here….. I mailed a sellers previous buyer to ask for feedback on themPosted 5 years agoLoCoMember
Just testing them first, will be cheap, quality v.good 😉 will also have the circlips and glide rings too, as you don’t usually need the bolts, bottom out bumpers along with the other o rings that don’t get used. 😀
Give me a week or so and it’ll all be on the site with other kits too follow soon, it also means that the cost of services won’t need to go up either 😀Posted 5 years ago
Right as stated got everything i need i used to work as a bike mechanic but the company sent forks off i’m well aware of the process its just trusting my self t do it.
Once i recive my o rings the service will be on its way.on a plus note the other party, has offered to split cost of the servicing, with out being asked.
I will also be measuring up o rings and seeing what i can get together in the future. as a set of metric and non metric o rings can be had pretty cheep from my local engeneering suppliers.Posted 5 years ago
