  • Broken wrist recovery – wrist braces?

So I broke my wrist about 5 weeks ago, possibly one of the tamest crashes I’ve ever had, but such is life.

I figured I’d just sprained it very badly, and we were in Canada so I strapped it up and loaded myself up on painkillers and just carried on riding. I finally got round to getting it X-rayed last week who confirmed I had broken my scaphoid, but they think I’ve also done some ligament damage. No cast as its too late but told to wear the brace I have for some support & stability.

Doctor reckons if all goes well The scaphoid should be ok in 10-12 weeks, but the ligament damage might prove to be more problematic, it’s been suggested I may need to wear a proper brace for riding in the future.

So, does anyone have any experience of decent braces for riding in? The Allsports Dynamics seem to get good reviews from users, but proper braces seem to be a bit thin on the ground. I would have throughout with MX and other such sports there would be a bit more choice, but it seems a bit limiting.

Had a carbon MX one with hell padding will dig it out and find the name loads of support and comfort so I could keep riding as soon as I’d whipped the cast off.

Cost about £80 from memory but was worth it they do a ton of sizes and you have to measure your wrist and hand and put it into there configure list to get the right one

That would be handy, excuse the pun.

I’m expecting the scaphoid to be ok, the ligament damage I’m a bit more worried about, they have been very non committal about recovery time, other than it could, and probably will be extended.

I used a brace back in 2001 after a bad motorbike crash messed my wrist up. I just used a 661 from memory. A slip 4 weeks ago saw me break my pisiform in the back/side of the wrist. This was diagnosed after I’d already raced a 50TT and a CX race. I bought a pair of the EVS Wrister Gloves to give the wrist support. They prevent the hand from bending backwards very far and offer a good bit of support to the side of the wrist. Very pleased.

I broke my wrist in November last year and I still can’t put much pressure on it. I have been ridding since January it is getting better every month but just a bloody pain in the ass. All the best with your recovery mate hope it’s a speedy 1

I combined a 661 brace with those NHS braces when I did my scaphoid and hamate, worked well while it healed and got up to strength. But I had no tissue damage, was only in cast for 4 weeks and had full mobility within about a week.

I’ve not really stopped riding, apart from a couple of days after I did it. I just ended up using a lot of physio tape to stabilise it, and had some pretty good Canadian prescription painkillers. It still hurt a lot, and I rode like a bit of a girl because I was terrified of falling off on it again. Oddly now I’m home and just riding the MTB at weekends it hurts more now than bashing out laps of a bikepark.

The basic braces don’t seem to offer the support I need to hold my wrist in the right place, or to stop it from ‘collapsing’ forwards or backwards on bigger hits, I’m assuming do to the ligament damage. I didn’t really talk with the doctor about it as I’d just been lectured why I’d not had it seen to before – I didn’t want to have another lecture about how to get back onto the bike quicker. They are also really bulky in the palm, which makes for an odd sensation when riding.

All the research points to the ASD braces, which are pretty pricey, but they seem to do exactly what I need. I shall investigate further.

Volar plate after an intra-articular triple fracture. Ive been road racing with a Demon Flexmeter snowboarding wrist brace for the past three months. It is rigid but has not really stood up to the forces and the fabric has torn. Still good for two hour plus races on rough roads.

It clamps both sides and is absolutely rigid. If you need a left one, drop me a line. For obvious reasons!

I broke my scaphoid and radius in May, cast for 8.5 weeks and a splint (completely immobilising it) got another 6-7 weeks before they gave me the all clear to move it at all. Still couldn’t put enough pressure on it to put a lid back on anything now, probably still 6 weeks before I can get back on a bike. Scaphoid is a bastard to heal properly so just be careful you’re not messing it up for later life not letting it heal properly!

Interested to see all the brace recommendations as I’ll be riding with one for a bit too.

I used a TLD one, got it from a MX online shop. Pretty good, but that was after a whole summer off the bike…

I cannot speak highly enough of Allsports Dynamics braces. They provide amazing support and add confidence. The ability to change range of motion is a huge plus when coming back from an injury.

I shattered my right distal radius 9 weeks ago yesterday. It was in 5 extra pieces and those parts were forced up the arm with the force of the compression. I’ve since had a 7inch plate fitted and 10screws.

My rehabilitation has been rapid mainly due to an amazing surgeon and probably one of the best hand therapists in the uk. I was back on the bike on the road after 7 week. Had I used the NHS I’d still be in a cast. The ligament and soft tissue damage is pretty major but the brace has got me back on the bike when everyone said it would be 2016 to begin with.

I would not hesitate to recommend their products. For a specialist product I also think they are good value.
