…turn a light on and off so rapidly that the human eye can’t see the flicker, but a photodetector can nonetheless pick up the stream of 1s and 0s the blinking bulb is transmitting. Compress the data, and you up the throughput even more. Old-style filament bulbs and fluorescent tubes aren’t up to the task, but new, LED-based lighting is.

Which is more likely, flooding a house with LiFi devices on a network, or embedding homeplug network technology in 3 pin plugs? You could have automatic hifi, video, gaming networking. Fridges that connect to your network to tell you you are running out of bacon flavoured mayonnaise! Networked coffee mahcines!

The potential is boundless, but Im all out of ideas. What have you got?

    Looks v promising to me.
Ericsson recently forecast that there would be about 50bn connected devices by 2020, rising from about 5bn in 2010. Li-fi will make this much easier
    But is it secure?

brooess – just as secure as any other modulated E-M spectrum carrier – but you may need wing mirrors to bridge it to other rooms 🙂

I think it won’t be long before standard wall sockets have 5v USB on them, and mains ring style networking…

It will be many many years.
One of many things Ive learnt on building the barn is that the electricals industry is the most backward uncoordinated bunch of moustachioed ‘tards in the world.
