Common problem. A crackly line means a fault, but it often won’t show any fault conditions. You need to ensure the noise isn’t being caused by your phone/extensions/skybox/adsl filters etc to reduce the chance of the fault being on your own wiring/equipment, and demand that they come out to fix it.

Are you the last one on aol? Try unplugging everything else and make sure the router is in the main socket. (Advice from my issues) look at what other bt options are available for your area.

the wire/end connector isn’t the correct fitment for the ‘main socket’

its plugged into a dual box that the phone plugs into – the wire/connector from this box then connects to the main socket

Our internet in our house did this a few days ago. The landlord sent a guy to have a look at it. Apparently the copper wiring was worn, so it needed replacing. We’re with Eclipse I think.

If the line is crackly, this has nothing to do with your ISP. This is either a fault with the in-home wiring, or the wiring from the exchange to your house. BT still owns this bit (the ISPs “rent” it).

Hassle AOL into getting another engineer visit to get this sorted – note that the ISP has to get a BT Openreach engineer to do this.

If the problem is your home wiring, it will cost you. If it’s the line into your house, BT will fix it for you/your ISP at no charge to you.

If it is the line, switching ISP won’t fix this fault.

Is this “dual box” a micro filter? Do you have one fitted? Have you got them fitted to any phone extension sockets in the house?

Does this ever happen at any other time (eg when you switch the dishwasher on, etc)?

BTW you can take the faceplate off the main socket. Behind there is a test socket. Plug direct into there – this may be better. NB BT owns this socket (it’s their line of demarcation), so don’t damage it..!

Any good with phone wiring? If you are disconnect all extension sockets, either plugged in or hard wired & leave only the main socket, most households only need this nowadays since wifi & wireless phones came on the scene. If the line is still the same then call your phone provider because you’ve proved it’s nothing your end that’s at fault. Our download speed is 0.4k, we live over a mile from the exchange so it’s the max we’ll ever get, however it used to be worse until I did the above.

weve virgin but for a while weve had problems, had new router/modem x2 several online consultations, eventually threatened to cancel unless engineer came out, when he turned up next day and looked outside it turned out the installation team that fitted our neighbours broadband just tapped into ours for easiness to save them work.

crackly line = imbalance= poo adsl.

get openreach around to fix.. insist line is noisy, even when your cp says ‘line test ok’.

pottsie, adsl will work to around 10km with the right conditions.. 0.4meg at a mile is rubbish.

you got a buzzy crackly line?
