Bleeding my shimano brakes yesterday. Front was fine. Got distracted mid job and forgot to put the bleed block in between the calipers at the rear. Managed to pop out one of the pistons.

pushed it back in, and surprisingly it worked fine after a rebleed. Can I expect it to start leaking as soon as I put any miles on it. Worked fine going up and down the road this morning.

for clarity, all I did was push the piston back into the little hole in caliper. I didn’t even consider things like were the seals intact..😬

    It’ll be fine 👍

Unless you jammed some sharp grit into the seals, it’ll be fine.

    Cool..

I assumed once they fell out they were done. Will keep an eye on them but seem fine for now!

I did this with a brand new Ultegra caliper a few months ago. Can’t believe I forgot to put in the bleed block. So far so good – no micro leaks and the brake has ok power. Fingers crossed it stays that way!

I’ve done this a few times on Shimano and Sram brakes. Obviously I need some kind additional focus when doing bike maintenance, I am the king of doing silly mistakes.

But yeah as others say they are fine as long as you wipe it off basically. Caused me zero issues. I’d imagine if they were unsafe to come out, there would be some kind of flange at the back to prevent this.

If its popped out its always worth giving it a good clean but your first instinct is to shove it back in ASAP to stop the brake fluid coming out.

As long as you didn’t damage it going back in it should be fine.

I did the same thing after fitting a new hose a year or so ago. It fell onto concrete, but I cleaned it and popped it back in, and it’s been fine.

I’m half willing them to fail so I’ll have excuse to buy something flashier, but these Deore 4-pots seem stubborn.

almost did mine too. since the piston is ceramic i didnt know if i could push it back in with a tyre lever.
also i dont know if i can use copperslip on it ( to stop the squeaking)
