Just a half thought out thought of a thread

How many swearwords aren’t sexual or excrement based?

I can think of bloody and hell, both pretty moderate and I guess some would never consider them to be so.
Hell being religion based, are there others?

    There must be more?

EDIT: thinking about it, swearing isn’t allowed on here so bleep it out or something

    That counts as excrement.

Used to get a clip round the ear for saying bloody when I was a kid.

Bloody is religion based, as it’s short for ‘Blood of Christ’, so it’s an oath, rather than swearing.
    Damn, or damnation, is another.
There’s lots of old English, and Shakespearian terms which look mild, but were very strong swear-words back then, like Swive, for example.
Can’t think of any others, off the top of my head.

In medieval times words pertaining to parts of the body/bodily & sexual functions were, if not polite at least in common usage across the social classes. If you really wanted to offend you used religious terms, Christ’s Blood, Gods Bones etc.

My favourite is “Thou still-born bastard of a thrice-poxed whore”

I always thought ‘bloody’ was an evolved version of ‘by our lady’ – in the same way as people say ‘by god’.

I’m quite partial to “oh, swearwords” as a swearword I can get away with in polite company.

Bloody is religion based, as it’s short for ‘Blood of Christ’,

    That’s almost certainly not true.

I think its actually ‘By Our Lady’ (edit Danny got there first, dreadful beslubbering, swag-bellied maggot pie that he is)

Its funny that some of the seemingly milder swears or insults have saucier origins

‘Berk’ is shortened from the cockney rhyming slang – Old Berkshire Hunt

In a Perkins Diesel engine user manual there is a fitting called a ‘Kingston cock flange’

Maccruiskeen with the best time-obscured meaning one there. People don’t believe me when I tell them that. The berks.

Sorry to have to be a smart arse again, but I think it is ‘Berkeley Hunt’. But the meaning is (obviously) the same.

Slightly off topic but relating to Americas favourite chat show host.
Steven Fry was on I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue recently and in the round about alternative word meanings described Countryside as “the killing of Piers Morgan” I nearly choked.

I learnt the other day that ‘gadzooks’, as in Mr Claypool from Rent-a-Ghost, actually comes from ‘God’s hooks’, meaning Christ’s nails. Blimey! A bit more graphic than I thought!

Loads of swear words that have their origins in Christianity…

    Damn/Damnation
    Bloody
    Hell
    etc

Ar5ehole , treads close to the edge on both criteria but just gets through I think .

I once briefly dated an Italian girl who swore a lot, mainly referring to various parts of donkey anatomy. Oddly, coming from here it never sounded complimentary.

Although it’s a) a bit passe and b) refers to a term that’s rhyming slang for a genital organ

Now I’ve seen that written down, that does look right, it was a long time ago I heard or read about it, so the meanings gotten garbled.
Nebbish is a good one, meaning a nerd or loser. One of the few Yiddish terms that aren’t deeply offensive.
