    Evening All,

I moved down to the south coast a few years back from Middlesex and recently got back into mountain biking (Enduro).Looking for some recommendations on decent bike shops near or around Portsmouth Area (Hampshire/West Sussex).

I have an Evans near by, but i like the little independent shops that have all the little mods/toys to go look at, suggestions please?

Have a look at QECP Mountain Biking group on Facebook and ask on there, a lot of local knowledge. I’m southampton so not sure who’s left over that way, a couple of good ones have closed down recently

Your pretty limited in the Portsmouth area for good mtb shops

Most shops are road/commuter/general bike type shops

We do have Evans as you said along with the following

Gabriel Cycles in Widley (just over the top of the hill from Cosham) they are mtb and e-mtb based but also do a range of other stuff, they are prob your best bet

Hargroves in Chichester & Southampton (Fareham branch has closed down)

Cycleworks and Owens cycles in Petersfield

Solent Cycles in Fareham, lee on Solent & Whitely

We did have Velocity/Southdown bikes in Portsmouth/Cosham and The Riders’ Guild in Chichester but all have now closed down

Even Wiggle have now completely left their old building on the Southampton road and only have office staff at the Lakeside complex, miss the days when you could walk in to their old sites to collect your order, even remember when they were just Butler Cycles in Southsea

Cycle surgery in Port Solent do some mtb stuff but are mainly road/commuter based

LOL, so do I!  We used to ride down there from Cosham after school, many conversations with Mitch back in the day!

Gabriel Cycles are pretty decent. Small shop, lots of stock and always helpful when I’ve popped in on the off chance of needing something.

My son used to ride for Primera Team Jobs and I went to the shop in Bournemouth a few times and was always like a kid in a sweet shop. The amount of amazing bikes they had was incredible (road and MTB).

    +1 for Hargroves as well

    Hi

Solent Cycles and Hargroves Cycles, both in Fareham and walking distance from Fareham train station if you are so inclined (beats driving round Pompey & Fareham).

I wouldn’t say either fully qualifies as “small business” or “niche” but generally had very high standards of service from both (for me and the children).

Second shout out for D&D cycles in barnham daves on it and knows his stuff. Also they run a pretty sorted team in local enduro events.

One of the Retrobike crew set up a non retro shop in Southampton and seems to know his stuff, not just a repair shop either.

Bike U Like down in Southsea are pretty good, although mostly touring and gravel specialists I think. Hargroves in Chichester are good as well. Massive shame the Riders Guild shut down as that was a top notch shop.

quick blat up the A3 gets you to MB Cyclery in Haslemere. Lots of fun stuff in there, the guys know their stuff and are pretty handy riders themselves. Usually have some demo bikes available.

    Chase Cycles in Waltham Chase.

    1 man (Aaron) set up.

He works his socks off to be fair and nothing has ever been a problem. He’s a whyte dealer so I get my bearings replaced yearly from him so just pay labour.

Also built my genesis longitude (He’s a genesis dealer too) from scratch to my spec.

Always happy for you to pop in for a chat and advice.

I’m terrible at putting links up but easy enough to Google.

Hargroves in Chi is still open. Was the Riders Guild that shut. I’m gonna have to go check out that Barnham shop as I work nearby.
Whereabouts are you OP? I’m in Portsmouth for part time Uni a fair bit and still fairly new to the area so exploring. Although the chalk is like a greased otter in a condom right now.

+1 for Chase Cycles, the guys busts his nuts after buying it a year or so ago and does a great bit of finding the balance between toys, stuff people actually buy, advice, chat and a damn good service place – I use it often.

If you’re more into gravelly or roady bikes check out Service De Velo in Botley, lots of bike porn in there if you want to hold shiny expensive carbon thin wheel bits and more like that sort of thing.
