Is there a way of paying extra(with the airlines) ,to cover the real cost of a lost luggage event,or should I just boost my contents insurance?.

Not looked into any upper limit with the airline but personally I'd make sure my contents and/or travel insurance covered the bike and kit just 'cos I'm more likely to get a better service from the insurance provider.
