Tally is greater for motorbikes than bicycles, and the bicycles tally is 17…. 😀

    @mamadirt, you still here?

Some of the numbers here are amazing! I’ve had three before 30 and three since. In both cases, only one has been a named bike, the others (and the best) have been self builds – so not many bikes, but a lot of component turnover (my current frame is on it’s 4th set of forks, second set of wheels, third set of bars, etc).

    Including 5 tandems and a unicycle, somewhere around 40 I think 🤔 plus 13 motorbikes…

Edit – just remembered the 3 x Ti mountain bikes missed off that tally, maybe I need to write them down..

Way to many to count. I had 7 bikes and 9 frames in the shed at one point. But now just down to 2. My On-One Freeranger for commuting and road then my YT Wicked for off road fun.

    Not enough.

I tend to keep hold of bikes too long until they’re old fashioned and near worthless. In hindsight, I should have bought a new bike in the sales and then sold it on after 12 months and then bought another one in the sales.

    List I put together previously:

    1. Kona Blast (black 26″ MTB) 2005 – 2005
    2. Mongoose Teocali Super (26″ Metallic grey and blue MTB) 2005 – 2008
    3. On-one Inbred (26″ pearlescent white MTB) 2006 – 2012
    4. On-one Scandal (26″ Anodized black MTB) 2007 – 2009
    5. Planet X SL Team (700c blue Road) 2008 – 2011
    6. Genesis Day-One (700c orange cross) 2009 – 2015
    7. Orange 5 (26″ red MTB) 2008 – 2013
    8. Cotic Soul (26″ black MTB) 2009 – 2013
    9. Cotic Soul (26″ orange MTB) 2013 – 2021
    10. Kona Zing (700c blue road) 2013 – 2015
    11. Orange Hitman (26″ black MTB) 2014 – 2015
    12. Rock Lobster Tig Team SL (26″ blue MTB) 2014 – Present (only in parts)
    13. Ritchey Logic Pro (700c grey road) 2015 – Present
    14. Croix de fer (700c red cross) 2015 – 2020
    15. Stooge (27.5+/29″ turquoise MTB) 2016 – Present
    16. Kona Paddywagon (700c purple road) 2017 – 2020
    17. Cannondale Scalpel SE (29″ black MTB) 2018
    18. Trek Crockett (700c mint green cross) 2020 – Present
    19. On-one Hello Dave (29″ green MTB) 2021 – Present

Slightly surprised to discover it’s 9 (since the age of 30 having stopped riding in my teens). Currently riding a hybrid Carrera for commuting, a rigid Brand-X HT-01 MTB for XC, and an Inspired Console street trials bike for feeling rubbish at trials riding. I built up a Bird Zero TR from frameset as my best bike, but didn’t look after the wheels and killed them so it’s disassembled and sitting on the shelf looking sorry for itself 🙁

Not that many I don’t think. In order of my ownership…

    – Funny little trike with a boot on the back (if that counts as a bike?)
    – Raleigh Chipper
    – Halfords 5 Speed ‘racer’ (this got abused off road way beyond it’s ability to cope – did I unwittingly invent Gravel in the early 80s?)
    – Homebuilt Police auction klunker #1
    – Homebuilt Police auction klunker #2
    – One-off ‘prototype’ Lee Cooper XC frame (now hanging on a toilet wall)
    – DMR Trailstar mk2 (still got – garage turbo bike)
    – Identiti Mr Hyde
    – Cotic BFe (still got – singlespeed and short travel)
    – Orange A160
    – Custom ‘cruiser’ based on an early 90s Peugeot MTB (still got)
    – Cotic Rocket (just about to try and sell)
    – Bamboo Bicycle Club road bike – home build frame kit (still got)
    – Sonder Transmitter (still got – do everything bike)
    – Cheap OneEighty kick bike (still got)
    – Cotic RocketMAX (still got – ‘main’ bike)
    – 2012 Specialized Epic (just today finished rebuilding into a ‘downcountry lite’ XC/trail/marathon thing)

I some many of you are sad over consumers.

1990 Emmelle MTB shaped object – scrapped
1992 Townsend Explosion MTB shaped object – scrapped.
1991 Orange Clockwork – frame one scrapped, head tube retained as a keepsake, but components reframed and hanging on the study wall.
1999 Orange Gringo – died of head tube deformation, head tube retained as a keepsake, some components still live.
2004? Kaffenback Blue Dragon – still in use as a drop bar bike with ‘guards.
    2010? Orange R8 – still in use as a commuter/ load hauler.
2011 Focus Izalco Pro – still in use as a road bike.
2015 Trek Superfly FS – munro approach bike, winter MTB with Ice Spikers
2020 Scott Spark – current ‘Highland’ mountain bike.

Proud to say I’ve never sold a bike, maintain them carefully, and ride them for as many miles as possible until dead.

To me posting up the longest list of MTBs owned just marks you out as a throbber who either a) can’t buy right or b) never actually bonds with a bike properly.

or maybe someone who just loves to try as many bikes as he wants, because A. he wants to. B. he can afford to. and c. because he is a big throbber who wants to try as many bikes as he can because he loves em.

dont get hung up on what other people do. it aint healthy.

How long a list is too long?

My list was 17 bikes in 17 years. Still have 6 of them. Only broke one of them. Gave one away. Sold the rest. Quite a few I sold on as a frame and moved the parts over to a new frame.

Obviously to a non cyclist it’s excessive (wife thinks this as well).

No idea what my first bike was but it was followed by

    Raleigh Striker
    Raleigh Grifter
Raleigh Quazar Road bike i had at about 14ish

Jump to when i was 37ish

Carrera Fury 2010 which now has semi slick tyres and is used for the old railway line and general stuff.
26″ BFE which i use as my “mountain bike”

Had an AM9 on order just as i started a new job and then covid hit so had to cancel as I didn’t know what was going to happen.

Out of all the bikes I’ve owned I think it’s only the last 3 that actually fit me properly.

Each of my 50 or so mtbs has gradually got bigger, taller, and longer. I have gone from a 26inch 90s hardtail with a zero rise stem and narrow 520mm bar to a 29er with 30mm of stem spacers and a 76mm rise bar.

Finally mtbs have grown long enough for me, and with a Surly Sunrise bar my hands are now in a good position. I have a comfortable biggish saddle, big pedals, and 820mm bars.

It’s taken the mtb industry 35 years to get bike fit right for my body. None of this justifies me trying so many bikes but it has driven the process to some extent, and I have loved every minute of it.

    Cotic Soul MkV (current hardtail)
Cotic Rocketmax Mk2 (current big bike)
    Genesis Fugio (current gravel bike)

    Then as commuters

    Dad’s old Peugeot winter bike
    Peugeot Optimum 531
    Condor Pista Steel
    Brompton (lurking in the cellar)
    Genesis Flyer. (current commuter)

Both Intenses, the Kona, the Turner, the Roadster the Brompton and both Genesis’ were secondhand (mostly frame only). The Raleigh and the 2 Peugeots were hand me downs. Until the last few years most of the list were just frame swaps to an evolving couple of build kits. Modern “standards” have put paid to that…!

I’ve had more (far more) than most of the “usual suspects” on here, but it’s not something I’m proud of – and I’m a reformed character these days.

In fairness, the geometry changes of the last few years in particular have solved most of the issues I was chasing in MTBs.

My favourite ever bike was my first proper bike. A Puch Pacemaker 5 speed racing bike in red, my mum bought for me from the 2nd hand part of the bike shop that sadly not been around for way too many years (80s Whitley Bay). Greatest thing on 2 wheels.

Small red thing with step-thru frame
    Raleigh Grifter
    Borrowed road bike
    Dahon Matrix
    Giant Anthem
    Cotic Soul
    Saracen Ariel
    NS Eccentric
    Cotic BFeMAX

I think only the mystery red bike and the Grifter, and the Matrix were complete off-the-shelf bikes, the rest have been frankenbikes.

The Matrix was the only one I bought new!

Some of the numbers on here are mental!

In 30’ish years since I got my first proper bike (Stumpy) I have had 7 bikes. It’ll be 8 this year or next. I’ve got some catching up
    to do.
