  • Best places to stay in 7 stanes?

Me and 3 mates are heading up to 7 stanes for a week. Last time we went we stayed in a self catered cottage 8 miles from the main road. Looking for something similar just better located. Any suggestions/recommendations? Cheers

Bunkhouse near GT (and so not far from Inners) is £20.

If you are looking to do most/all of the 7 stanes, have a google for ‘self catering moffat’ .. if you’re more into the innerleithen/glentress area, a similar kind of search for peebles brings up a few places.

Kailzie bunkhouse near Glentress is good and £20 a night. Sadly the bunkhouse near Dalbeatie has closed but there’s still the overpriced campsite at Kippford. At least the local pub is good. If you want really cheap then just pitch a tent in a remote spot and wash/poo at the trail centres or a pub.

I stayed in one of those wooden huts at GT and was pleasently surprised by it. Should be able to fit you all in there easy enough.
Wanlockhead youth hostel is very nice, I prefer the smaller ones, and not too far from Mabie and Dalbeattie, but even closer to Drumlanrig, which is not one of the 7 but well worth a visit if you are in the area.

are you referring to Gorsebank near Dalbeattie?

For a weeks trip divide your time between staying somewhere near/in Peebles/Inners and near Dumfries.

If you can fill it Greenhead Lodge, north of Dumfries is excellent and very good value

Such a beautiful building. It really improves the scenery in such a horrible area (or have I got that the wrong way round). 😉

    Hi Dunsby21,

I have a cottage that is between Marie and Dalbeattie that sleeps six if you are interested. You can cycle to both in 30 mins along quiet roads or drive in 10 or so minutes. You can get to Ae, Kirroughtree, Glen Trool or Drumlanrig all in less than an hour. I will pm you my address if you are interested or look at my profile or http://www.burnbankcottage.co.uk I have had a good few STWers and it is set up for MTBs.

A group of us rode the 7 stanes last year and stayed at the galloway activity centre http://www.lochken.co.uk/accommodation/mongolian-yurt which was our base for raiding mabie, dalbeattie, Ae and kirroghtree. We They have yurts and teepee’s which was affordable and pretty cool. I also recommend the campsite at glentress and have stayed kailzie guesthouse too however take a sleeping mat as the matresses are very lumpy but they do a good cooked breakfast
