New oak external door arriving soon – it needs coating in something. Any recommendations? A decent varnish or an oil (I’ve good success with Osmo on the kitchen worktops).

Prefer something that didn’t need redoing too often and is a bit tough as the dog taps on the door to be let in.

Osmo UV is probably the best product out there for oak and have used it lots in the past. Be aware that although it does give some protection from UV, over time the oak will weather to a silver/grey colour.

For future refernce Osmo also do a restorer to sort out the silvering.

This is very dependent on the direction the door is facing. South, and the sun will bleach it, north and the damp and mildew will stain it.

East facing door, doesn’t get much sunlight on it due to surrounding buildings so hopefully won’t get bleached too quickly.
