I know a few folks have had Ti frames custom built in china and Taiwan, do you have any recommendations for the best ones to deal with or ones to avoid and what was the whole process like.

I need a sort of copy of something I already have before it dies in spectacular body impaling stylee. 😀

    cheers

Speak to Craig at Ride On Cycles in Rawtenstall; he makes the Global Ti bikes – or used to at any rate.

I have had a ti bike done by xacd in china quality
Was very good but it did take 4 months rather than
The quoted 5 weeks they are fun to deal with but they made
A good job of it a few people had problems with porter who is the
    Email contact
I have a second on it’s wAy hopfully in a couple of weeks
Another e stay 29er mine was about $2000 Inc postage but
Every tube is bent which has up charge and my own design adjustable
Dropouts which added a lot to the bill

i had comunication with Xacd.com when i looked into it – they were very helpful but its best if you have a clear idea about what you want 1st as they wont point out if they think you’ve got some thing wrong. Things like double butted or tripple butted tubes are a cost option, as are bends in the top and down tube, wishbone seat stays, dropout design etc. Try to get a clear idea about what you want before getting them to draw it up in CAD and give them as much info as possible.

I never got my frame made – as the design i wanted went up to around £750 (delivered). i got tehm to do two drawings though…

    It went from this:
    to this:

i wanted a 16″ frame with low standover, clearance for a 100mm fork, and a long toptube at 584mm (the equivelent of an 18″). Changes i made to the drawings are the bend in the down tube (added fork clearance) and the seat/topetube bridge as it was cheaper than having the tube bent.

I know exactly what I want as I have an Al frame that is fantastic but now flexier than a flexy thing so I’m after something like it but with a taller head tube to take my jones Ti truss forks a bit more elegantly

I went through about 10 drawing updates I originally did my own drawing
Which they converted the autocad I then added my changes

But be certain as what is on the drawing is what you will get
Porter can be pushy to sign off the drawing and get you to send money
but take your time and be certain

But there is nothing better than riding a bike that you have designed
ok maybe one you have built

…as above; XACD are your best bet so long as you don’t take anything personally. Have a peek at my post that offers a few tips on dealing with ‘Porter’:

Someone else got in touch with me the other day saying they’d ordered a frame from these people (Titan Product) who seemed very helpful, although they wanted cash upfront before making any drawings:

Only just ordered so I’ve not heard how he got on yet…

I cant for the life of me remember the name of the company but one of the London polo boys just had a Russian ti frame built. was aroung £600 for frame and fork I think. he’s well chuffed with it.

Slight aside…what are the benefits of truss forks?

The Jones truss fork is stiffer than a very stiff thing.

The steel truss is also lighter than the standard looking steel fork too.
