After looking at loads of different cars I keep thinking I should go for the sensible option and get a Citroen Berlingo Multispace.

Like the look of them and they outdo most SUVs on practicality, but I’ll miss the leather heated seats in the Yeti.

Probably but for us it’s not worth the additional money to change just for the sake of some creature comforts. Depends what your budget is

Just buy better seats? I bet there’s a bigger, comfier seat in another model which would bolt in with minimum work.

There’s loads of options for my Transit Connect I’m just waiting for something to pop up locally.

Galaxy or alhambra/sharan? Both similar in size inside to a berlingo, much nicer, bigger on the outside thou and cost more to run

Caddy Maxi Life or Ford Tourneo Connect are a bit nicer inside. Worth having a look if they do the options you want.

Depends really…practical or sensible don’t really include leather seats as those tend to add expense (and although probably easier to clean, tend to scuff and mark with ease so may not be practical or sensible depending on what is sitting or resting against them).

Heated seats were an option on the car so may be a possible retrofit…

The cloth interiors a bit of a pain in winter but the seats are plenty comfy – outdoor spec with arm rest and adjustable base

The sliding rear door is the best thing about the car with small child

Mostly yes. Unless the cloth is black it gets water stains very quickly.

Gluptons been looking – and I’ve been looking for him for a Berlingo or any people carrier largely….and the prices folk are asking for utter garbage are mental. -as someone who has been pro and practicing bangernomics for years it’s hard to justify what appears to be the baseline price for. Something with a ticket that isn’t simply asking to be sat at the side of the road waiting for recovery

I dont think theres a more practical car then the Berlingo and its identical twins.
Theres plenty of cars with better interiors.
I too crave a “proper” car with that useability. I dont want a vw shaz+tracey thing.

Problem with aftermarket seats is that youve modified the car and the insurance goes up a LOT.
Only **** and volkswankers mod their ridez innit, so thats who you’ll be treated as.
(One can of course do almost anything to a classic car and the insurers are fine with it)

Bangers – yes the chancers are having a laugh at the moment. Not much on the market thats any good. Theres always loads of dross for sale, there are good buys out there, just have to look a bit harder.

Seems odd to me with manufacturers trying to reduce emissions and a big focus on the impact emissions have on the environment.

I dont know. The Berlingo 110bhp 1.2 engine has more torque than my 110bhp 1.2 yeti and I find that quite nippy.

No. It’s got a fault that will likely be very expensive and I’m not prepared to pay that much on a car with 15k miles on it. It’s going.

No. 15k and has clutch/gearbox issues. My fault for not doing enough research on the DSG DQ200 box. Expensive mistake but I’m moving on and wont ever look back at VAG cars.

The DQ200 box is known to not last long. Clutch pack failure being the most common issue. Then I found most places dont want to know or even have a look. VW said they wont even plug it in to try and diagnose it. Skoda are useless; the car could be on fire with wheels falling off and they would still say “no fault found”.

This seems to fall foul of the EU durability of goods rulings. We havent left the EU yet and all its rules are adopted into UK law. You might want an independent engineers report and a good solicitor who specialises in this area.

My mother just coughed up £1500 to have the dual pack clutch on her 4yr old polo replaced (another DQ200 model with <30K on the clock. VW didn’t feeling inclined to contribute though the internet says this is a known issue.

I love our yeti and similarly looked at a Berlingo. I suspect the berlingo has a better van like boot space than the yeti. I was looking at the XTR spec but yes, still a step down in term of comfort from a leather trimmed yeti with heated seats.

Can fit 4 washing machines in the back of a Berlingo – unlikely to ever need to happen as a car, but it does shine a light on the van-derived history and it’s great load capacity.

We have a 2013/4 model Partner and it has been absolutely brilliant apart from 2 incidents – first one was due to ex-mobility car and having very low mileage – I should have driven it a bit harder for the first month to clean out the engine, but I didn’t and it needed a proper clean as the engine management light came on and limp-mode was enabled. Second was a leak in the rear door bumper, which was easily fixed but took a few months to diagnose.

I absolutely love it and I’m looking to get a newer version, but other half isn’t quite so keen. I reckon once it is gone we will instantly miss the practicality of it…however prices aren’t looking great. Ideally a 3 year old model in the Outdoor/XTR guise – which I think is GT Line or something. They all appear to be around £12k which is too much.

Might keep this another year as there isn’t anything wrong with it really…coming up to 60k, so the service may require belts or something changed, which is likely to not be cheap, but if it keeps it going them all good, but I would like a newer version and replace like-for-almost-like.

Tried that. Independent garages couldn’t pin point the issue so Skoda wouldn’t investigate. Cant afford a solicitor to fight such a huge company. Cheaper to sell and move on.

Look at the solicitors doing class actions on VW emmissions scandals. They may well have something in the pipeline. Doesnt hurt to ask.

We have a new shape Berlingo XL. It’s ace! Loads of room and height inside. Triple split rear seats are dead easy to fold as needed.

Hard to beat if you want a low floor, high ceiling, sliding doors, big tailgate, but that isn’t based on a commercial van and has all the comfort and luxuries of a nice car.

For UK market though worth looking at the next up from the Berlingo/Rifter – the Spacetourer, Traveller, etc. The XS length is quite compact (4.6m long) and the M isn’t bad at 4.95m. Still a bit van-y but high spec ones have heated leather and plenty of toys.

The C4 Spacetourer does look nice. Does anyone know if you can get a bike in upright with he front wheel off in the 4.6 meter version? I have back problems so don’t want to be laying a bike flat and struggling to get the bike out again.

He didn’t mean that C4 one, he meant the actual spacetourer (also available via toyota, peugeot and now vauxhall). Citroen apparently have quite a limited vocabulary. It’s the car version of their slightly bigger van.
