    My ancient babybliss hair clippers have given up and its time for a new set.Obvious choice is Wahl not fussed for corded or cordless.

    Primary use would be bare blade all over head 🙂

    My first pair of Wahl clippers lasted me about 25 years. So, when they recently broke I replaced them with similar. I went corded again, as I don’t see cordless lasting anywhere near as long, and the cord is no hassle. £12.99 from Argos.

    wahl magic clip, expensive but will cut the thickest of stubble. Don’t buy trimmers or anything cheap.

    I bought a Wahl Super Taper a few weeks ago, having finally found a suitable Wahl clipper in stock.

    Not cheap at about £65 but it’s a really high quality item, very satisfying to use, reassuringly heavy and feels like it will last for many years.

    Got mine here: https://www.coolblades.co.uk/

    Assuming you’re looking for a close as possible cut.

    I’ve got an Oster 616 with a 0000 blade and rate it. I’ve also heard good things about the Wahl “balding” clippers.

    Had my Wahl Super Taper clippers for around 15 years still perfect with plenty of grunt, had a cheap £20 set before and they would stall if going a little heavy handed. The Wahl ones remind me of the scene in the barber shop in Full Metal Jacket

    I have my Wahl Super Taper for 20 years plus now still runs as good as the first day I used it. I have no problem with it but not bald enough so bought a cheap Wahl (£12) to see if it cuts closer and it did but slightly. The cheap one is still working fine but I have decided to invest in a Wahl Balding few months ago. Been using it for the past few months and it is much better than the previous two (I did zero gap it further). The cut is very close but not like shaving close but good enough. So far the Wahl Balding has been good and I am happy with my investment.

    I think I will give a razor shave a go to see how it feels when I am free to see how it feels.

    I might also try out Kemei 2600 cordless Chinese clone of Wahl Magic. Friend got one in the far east and told me it was fine.

    Just doesn’t seem to be much stock of Wahl clippers at the moment and what there is is over priced. I think I can hang on a bit until stocks are better and prices have dropped

    Wahl balding here for the past 15 years. Cuts sufficiently close that I use it for my face too – gets my stubble as short as a blade cut would be after 12 hours

    This is a very pertinent point. I normally have my head shaved at the barbers each week but have a set of 0000 clippers for other times – very useful at the moment! After a day or two my barbered head is the same length as a full shave.

    so bought a cheap Wahl (£12) to see if it cuts closer and it did but slightly

    If you’re not bothered about trying to get it super short then a standard set of Wahls works great! Getting super tight usually needs something a bit more specialised that can fit a blade with lots of zeros.

    0 = 1.2mm
    0000 = 0.25mm
    00000 = 0.20mm

    Standard clippers with the plastic guards the pop on only go down to a 0. The ones with the metal clip on blades go down to the shorter lengths.

    Hair grows at roughly 0.33mm (low end of range) per day so if you get a full tight shave it will typically go:

    Day 0 = 0mm (bald!)
    Day 1 = 0000 clipper
    Day 4 = 0 clipper (1.2mm)
    Day 8 = 1 clipper (2.4mm)

    Having a shave buys you an extra day over a 0000/00000 and 4 days over a standard minimum 0 clipper.

    I wish Wahl Balding has 0000 blade or something that can cut even shorter. Someone on YouTbue was comparing to Andis 0000 and the conclusion was almost the same. I think I will do a razor shave when I am free. 🙂

    I definitely need a cordless one just for the sake of having one.

    The funny thing is that when having a wet shave it actually looks better the next day. Immediately after the skin can look at bit shiny and needs the matte effect of the stubble to look better.

    I’m lucky as my local Nepalese barber does a full blade shave and head massage for 3 quid. Otherwise, I’d certainly use the 0000 clippers every time.

    Random update.

    I’ve purchased the Wahl “Balding” clippers due to a convenient sale and not being able to buy a replacement Oster 00000 blade.

    All I can say is that they are far superior to my Oster ones. If you’re getting clippers for a total zero all over then these are fantastic, and cheaper. Super efficient and tight cut. No need to go over bits again so no redness. Well done, Wahl.

    Would definitely recommend and only 50 – 60 quid.

    I have the Wahl Super Taper and it’s fab, but you probably want the Balding ones, as mentioned.

    Got mine from Coolblades IIRC, when there wasn’t much stock anywhere last year.

    Not that anyone’s suggested them, but never Philips. I’ve had two sets (due to getting some vouchers from work) and both have only lasted until just outside the guarantee period.

    I’ve got some cordless Phillips ones…. they seem to work fine – no probs after 4 years or so.

    Anyone using the wahl cordless?

    Had a few over the last 25 years and as a no 1 all over chap can’t fault the cheapest corded Wahl ones. At about 13 quid they are incredible value for money. The only reason my 1995 originals broke was being dropped and snapping the metal blade. Now my son wants a cut at no 8 I needed the longer grade and it was as cheap to get new clippers from Argos, with 1-8 grades, as it was for the set of plastic bits.

    Wahl cordless here, £20 odd quid model, charge lasts for ages. I just go over it with a No 1 and it makes when wonder when or why I would need to go back to the barbers.

    Barber here with a bald head…

    Wahl are really solid. I use both Magic Clips and Senior cordless these days but the good old Supertaper quite literally lasts forever, even in a shop situation.

    On my own head I now use a Remington RX5 every day or other day but if I want it really smooth I finish off with my Babybliss Pro titanium foil shaver.

    save yourself the trouble and just get the womens Venus razor, absolutely the best tool for the job and you get a few days longer until it needs doing again

    It would be about 3 months before the cost of the blades exceeded the fanciest Wahl…!

    Wahl are really solid.

    Can confirm from our dog clippers. If they can trim fur with ease, then they’ll have no trouble with hair! But I still have some.

    I’ve been using a cordless Philips set for the last few years, 0.5mm has worked well for me.

    Considering a set of these next though after a recommendation from a fellow baldy at work;

    Anyone got a recommendation for cordless clippers that do both beard and hair well ? (Hair cut as short as poss as I’ve not that I’ve got much left anymore).

    I’m currently using a Philips vacuum beard shaver which is ok, but never gets round the moustache area well. And my hair clippers have been duct taped together they are that old any corded which is getting to be a pain.

    I’m with @finbar – I’d not buy Phillips again.

    Hair cut as short as poss

    Here’s where there’s a difference with clippers. Pretty much all clippers do a 0 length when the guard is of, but that isn’t zero mm, it’s actually 1.2mm.

    You can’t really go wrong with standard clippers.

    If you want to go really short, ie 00000, or 0.2mm (which saves doing it so often as well as a different look), then you’ll need something a bit more specialist like an Andis/Oster with clip on blades (not combs on a fixed blade) or the Wahl Balding.

    Depends what you want, really!

    I have a wahl li-on cordless. Had it for 4 years, battery lasts for months just going over my head once or twice a week with a number 1. No noticeable battery degradation so far, worth it for the convenience IMO.

    @hugo I’m after one set of clippers (pref cordless) that does hair & stubble, and where I can get the haircut as close as possible.

    Oh and “probably” like most of STW I don’t want to pay hundreds for this, as that would eat into bike & kit money.

    For cordless, I’m not sure, sorry.

    For corded, definitely the Wahl Balding ones. Far tighter cut than a pair of regular clippers on zero.

    I actually use a separate pair of regular 20 quid Remington clippers on zero for the face as they leave a bit of stubble (and avoid making me look like a cue ball). The Wahl comes with plastic combs but I’ve not used them!

    Cordless wahl magic clip here.
    Easily 5 years old…
    Treated it to new blades a few weeks ago. Battery seems to last forever. Used every week.
    Cannot fault it, feel like ive already had my moneys worth. Will buy again

    In the name of science a buzzed my face with the balding clippers.

    Wouldn’t recommend. Generally stressful and and caught a couple of times on skin not kept taught.

    Great for the scalp. Not the face.

    Quick update, I bought a set of Panasonic ER-GB80 at £38. Cordless and waterproof.

    Wish I’d found these years ago. Much easier than what I was using before, no nicks, battery lasts a couple of weeks easily, no mucking about cleaning after either, as I just shave the bonce and beard in the shower! Which has taken a bit of getting used to, as it feels like I’m doing it blind.
    Without the attachment length guide thing it gets close enough for me, probably not as close as the Wahl “balding” clippers, but I wasn’t fussed about getting a zero cut.
