Back protector to fit in back pack?

Can you buy separately a back protector to fit in your back pack? Obviously various manufacturers make their own versions to fit their own packs but I would like one to fit my own pack. I imagine I might have to cut to shape. If not, can you buy the material to make your own? I shan’t be jumping off cliffs but would like something to give a reasonable level of protection.

Might be worth looking at motorcycle back protectors.

They come ‘loose’ and fit into pockets in the jackets so you can find one the right size for your needs. I imagine you can cut most down too.

My Evoc has one as standard and it’s very comfortable. Wouldn’t wear any other pack now.

Not something I’d DIY to be honest. Plenty of options around and I think there maybe a PSA on here for a Scott one?

2nd the Evoc 👍I bought one after a scary off in Madeira , I’ve got crushed vertebrae in my spine so that concentrated my mind.

The bargains thread had a Scott with back protector in this week. We’ve one of them in the household – anecdotally the wearer took a rather large flip on a rocky trail and walked away with just a bruising each side of the pack…

Have had my Evoc for years. Only complaint is it gets hot, but then I suffer from a sweat back.

I’ve a BlueGrass back protector that allows you to roll it up (think it’s that D3 type stuff) if you do it slowly and as long as it’s not cold. I often roll it and stuff it into my helmet which hangs from my stem on long climbs.

GF has an Evoc back protector. Lots of adjustment, but it’s the same small removable panel that you find in Evoc backpacks so it can’t be rolled/compacted.

I’ve lost the spine protector from the inside of my old Evoc. All the inserts I could find online were around £50, with no guarantee of fit.

So I bought the £40 Scott pack that I put the link up for in the PSA thread. Seems decent enough but if you’re of larger build you might struggle with the Belly strap.

You can get a dakine d3o insert that my wife has in her boarding backpack. Can’t remember how much it was though

You can buy D3O back protector inserts (as well as knee pads, etc) so you could just get one of them (they’re usually pretty cheap) and slot that in somehow

I’ve got an evoc one. I find it comfortable, if sweaty. It’s definitely lessened the impact when I’ve come off wearing it.

I wasn’t wearing it when I broke my back though 😣

We’ve used them to replace inserts in pads and to source inserts for backpacks. They have inserts that fit perfectly into Dakine snow packs.

@FOG given you ride with a pack anyway maybe one with built in protector is the way forward?
