Aunt sues 12 year old nephew a year after his mum died because he hugged her too enthusiastically when he was 8. Stay classy America.

It’s an insurance thing I presume – she has to sue her nephew to collect on the insurance. Sadly not the sort of thing which is confined to the US any more.

She waited 4 years before doing anything?

What aracer said. Had a similar claim in UK where using a bouncy castle resulted in brain injury. Suing the family member invokes the household/legal insurance. You could describe it as cynical or pragmatic, but it’s not “gee look at those crazy yanks”.

Completely different cases, in one the child was affected severely for life and needed expensive care 24/7, the other an HR bod had a slightly hurty wrist..

Oi – don’t you be dismissing the seriousness of a hurty wrist!

Depends on which wrist and relationship status.

Not new. A mate crashed his bike and his girlfiend sued him.
She sued him for a while they were rolling in dosh. That must be
    around 1980.

Mate and his Dad did the same. Mate suffered permanent injuries in a bike accident while he was pillion and his Dad riding. Suing his dad was the mechanism used to get the insurance to pay out for the injuries. Perfectly amicable, that’s how the system works.

Explanation of what happened here. Basically, as above, insurance wouldn’t payout until a legal verdict had been reached.
