How bad can any lump of alloy holding some bought in cartridge bearings actually be?

I imagine they’ll be pretty much the same as any other simar hub

Had a pair about 8 years ago and they were fine, huge hub bodies
    though.

Running one on the front. Very light and spins round and round.

Tazzymtb is your man for info on middleburns. He has a a full set and swears by them, including an uberlight singlespeed specific rear one. His are very light indeed and spin way more freely than my hope set (which are not as new to be fair).

Well I normally run Hope XCs which are good but I have had about 7 sets over the years built on them and they all seem not to be very fast rolling. Peter I would agree that a front hub is a front hub if its a cartridge bearing, a King would not be much different from a basic catridge bearing hub in many ways. Its the rear that are the big difference, mainly freehubs and bearing life etc
